Cut Chemist - The Garden

Give this one a chance. It’s starts off a little slow but overall is a great musical composition. The orchestrator? Cut Chemist. The first song I ever posted for Daily Crack was RJD2’S Rain which sampled Astrud Gilberto’s Gentle Rain. The general consensus is that Cut Chemist samples Astrud Gilberto’s version of Berimbau (which I’ve yet to find but another version can be heard here). A berimbau is a Brazilian instrument and, pretty much, is just a one-stringed Bow and a shaker. If you’ve never bared witness to someone getting down and funky on one, indulge yourself here. It’s probably the most gangster instrument ever. You need to get the party popping? The Brazilians got you, Macgyver style. All they need is a bow, a string, and one of those party balloons filled with rice. The Garden is Cut Chemist’s tribute to the berimbau instrument and the song it inspired. Enjoy.

Berimbau Lyrics (by user: TPT1 @ AllaboutJazz.com’s General Music Discussion forum):

(Baden Powell e Vinicius de Moraes)

Quem é homem de bem não trai
O amor que lhe quer seu bem
Quem diz muito que vai, não vai
Assim como não vai, não vem
Quem de dentro de si não sai
Vai morrer sem amar ninguém
O dinheiro de quem não dá
É o trabalho de quem não tem
Capoeira que é bom não cai
Mas se um dia ele cai, cai bem
Capoeira me mandou dizer que já chegou
Chegou para lutar
Berimbau me confirmou vai ter briga de amor
Tristeza, camará
====================================
A rough English translation:

A righteous man does not betray
the love that wants to do good for him
Whoever says they go a lot, they don’t go
because it doesn’t go, it doesn’t come
Who inside himself doesn’t try
will die without loving anyone
Wealth that doesn’t give
is the work that has nothing
Capoeira that is good doesn’t fall
and if some day it falls, it falls well
Capoeira told me to tell you that it’s already here
It arrived for battle
Berimbau confirmed to me that there will be a fight for love
Sadness, my friend

Mtume-Juicy Fruit

who are these people??? all these years i thought chaka khan performed this song, either alone or with rufus. not once in my life had i heard of mtume. is my entire life a lie?? what else have i been wrong about?? everything feels so unstable now. i don’t know what to believe in anymore. well, i guess i have to thank the wonderful people in mtume for ‘juicy fruit’. it’s a great song. absolutely great. they should, though, invest in a better marketing department.

you now very well what you are
your my sugar thang my chocolate star
I’ve had a few but not that many
but you’re the only one that gives me good and plenty

Juicy Fruit—-juicy

Candy rain coming down
taste in my mind
and spread you all around
here I am oh this loves for you
hey baby swee as morning dew
close my eyes oh what fantasy
and yur right here with me

Juicy

Cherry blossom kiss
is what you givin’
makes my body rock
keeps me sizzlin’
do what you will
I don’t care
I’ll be your lollipop
you can lick me everywhere

Juicy Fruit—-your so (juicy) Juicy
juicy fruit—-juicy

Here I am this loves for you
hey baby your sweet as honey dew
close my eyes oh what fantasy
and your right here with me

Juicy—-Juicy Fruit (repeat until end)

Donell Jones - Where I Wanna Be

Donell Jones

This song has the prestigious honor of being one of the few songs I have given a second chance after I’ve already determined that I hate it. When this song came out in ‘99 I decided on first listen I couldn’t stand it. Everytime the video would come on (back when music stations only played music videos) I would immediately turn. That said, the other songs I’d heard were FIRE - so I went out and bought this cd and Next on the same day (yea - that joint was the ish too - I actually think Schwing was there [remember the Specs on South Street?]). I listened to the cd all the way through once and it didn’t leave me cd player for several weeks thereafter. And after that point, I could never get tired of this song. Its like all of my initial hating came back to kick my ass with karmic avengence. I could listen to this track over and over and still want to hear more of it.

So…here’s hoping karma doesn’t kick your ass and leave you stuck on a song for 10 years like it did to me. Or maybe here’s hoping that it does. I STILL can’t get enough of it. Enjoy!

Donell Jones - Where I Wanna Be

I should have left my baby girl a message
Sayin’ I wouldn’t be coming home
I’d rather be alone
She doesn’t fully understand me
‘Cause I’d rather leave than to cheat
If she gives me some time
I can be the man she needs
But there’s a lot of lust inside of me
And we’ve been together since our teenage years
I really don’t mean to hurt her, but I need some time
To be alone

*Chorus*
But when you love someone
You just don’t treat them bad
Oh, how I feel so sad
Now that I wanna leave
She’s crying her heart to me
How could you let this be?
I just need time to see
Where I wanna be
Where I wanna be…

I don’t mean to hurt you, baby, oh, no, no…

Never did I imagine
That you would play a major part
In a decision that’s so hard
Do I leave, do I stay, do I go?
I think about my life and what matters to me the most
Girl the love that we share is real
But in time your heart will heal
I’m not saying I’m gone
But I have to find what life is like
Without you

*Chorus*

I don’t mean to hurt you, baby oh no

*Chorus 3x*

Radiohead- the Gloaming (live)

it’s no secret that i like these guys. i think i mentioned thom as one of the few ‘bathwater’ artists. i seem to like virtually everything he does. his solo album is the sort i’d make had i any musical abilities at all. the other guys are great too. this is by no means a one-man-band. i want to commend jonny for his work on ‘there will be blood’. i’ll keep things simple this time around. i like this song. i particularly like this version of it. i hope you do too.

Chicago - Streer Player

this song is from a time period where Chicago gets absolutely no love…. the dreaded disco years, but…. if you’ve been checking the site long enough you would know that i’m a disco revivalist and i’m fighting hard for you all to realize the errors of your disco hating ways.

there’s a certain underground club in atl that plays this track religiously every wednesday, which introduced me to this song… and i love it.  the song is just funky and danceable with a great horn section.  and dammit i’m a street player too.

Spoon - My Little Japanese Cigarette Case

i don’t know what he keeps in his japanese cigarette case.  it could be coke, it could be a lock of mj’s hair, it could be the cure to aids, it could be some honey nut cheerios, or it could be cigarettes, who the hell knows.  but there’s something about this song that is hypnotizing that just sucks me in.  i’ve been binging on this spoon album really heavy recently.  i pulled it back out after not listening for a while and it’s still fresh and definitely a top release from 07.

Seasick Steve- Walking Man

‘walking man’ is a quaint love song by the simplest of men, seasick steve. from what i’ve read, what you see is what you get. from what i see and hear, steve is a wonderful guitarist, a talented songwriter, and absolutely unconcerned with his appearance. terrible. anyway, this is a love song from the common man. there are no promises of materials gifts, just hartfelt expressions of devotions from a man who doesn’t have much to give. it’s a wonderful recession-proof love song. i hope you enjoy it.
