Emiliana Torrini - Heard It All Before

Emiliana Torrini is a pop/alternative singer-songwriter originating from Iceland. I came across her when someone on tumblr posted a song by her. I was immediately intrigued, especially by her voice, which has a light and deceptively playful quality to it (come to think of it, she’s sounds quite similar to Bjork and Leila Moss from The Duke Spirit. For some reason, female singers from Iceland tend to have similar sounding voices). Emiliana’s music is quite versatile, ranging from trip/hop and electronica, to folk and pop. I’ve only recently begun listening to her, but have already bought several of her albums and really enjoying everything that I’ve been hearing from her so far. I highly suggest giving her a listen; she’s great when you’re in the mood to listen to something different.

One of my favorite songs by her is Heard It All Before, coming off her seventh and latest album, Me and Armini. The song has Emiliana singing about having an affair with her lover and her partner not wanting to hear any of her excuses. The track has a noticeable reggae sound to it, in fact, Me and Armini has several reggae influenced songs, and surprisingly, it works well for Emiliana. It goes to show you how talented this woman is.

Night time no one hits the shore
It’s me and you time
All those times we had affairs
The waves they never tell

Maybe you have found me out
Where I’ve been lately
Now your heart is broken with the one you trust
There’s nothing I can say

You’ve heard it all before
My keys won’t fit that door
You’ve never heard it all before
You want me here no more

And you can run away
Oh no I can’t, oh no I can’t
‘Cause the faith that he has given is unturned

And you can run away
Oh no I can’t, oh no I can’t
‘Cause the darkness hits the railway on that bridge

You’ve heard it all before
My keys won’t fit that door
You’ve heard it all before
You want me here no more

Heard it all before
I’m losing you once more
You’ve heard it, yes you’ve heard it

Oh maybe you can let me know
Where this will take me
All the nights I longed to be like this
Where all is lost in bliss

Somewhere parked along the streets
I had my run yeah
All the money never had me bought
He had me, had me then once more

And you can run away
Oh no I can’t, oh no I can’t
‘Cause the darkness hits the railway on that bridge

Mmm and sunshine hits the shore
And cools her rays once more
You’ve heard it all before
You want me here no more

A momentary lapse
A passion that would pass
You’ve heard it all before
Be it you outside my door
