Colin Munroe feat. Joell Ortiz- Piano Lessons

i don’t know much about mr. munroe. this is the only song of his i’ve heard. i learned about the song while watching an interview with joell ortiz. joell touched on a number of issues including his tendency to put out videos for many of his songs, his work with slaughterhouse, and his ‘left field’ work. the interviewer mentioned this song because he felt it was a perfect example of joell doing something different. as i listened to the two of them talk, i became intrigued. what, i wondered, was so ‘left’ about the song. i began to think of crazy stuff. was he rappin’ with a mariachi band? was he singing with prince? was he rapping in japanese? i had no idea. what i discovered when i actually heard the song, was a fun, catchy song built around a nice piano loop and a sing-a-long chorus. i liked it immediately. i liked the video as well. it was nice to see such a personal touch. the home video footage made the song even more endearing. i still have no idea what’s so different about it, but i like it. it’s been a little over a month (maybe two) since i first heard the song, and i’ve not yet listened to more than one other song by mr. munroe. i still plan to check him out at some point. i hope you will do the same. enjoy.
