Dirty Projectors- Stillness is the Move

ok. before we get started, i must say that this is more about the song than the video. once you watch it, i think you’ll understand. with that said, let’s talk about the important stuff. i was introduced to this group last year. a good friend of mine really enjoyed their album ‘rise above’ and mentioned it to me when he found out they were to perform in the city (i think that’s how it happened). i checked out a few of their performances for la blogotuque, a site that broadcasts live performances by (typically) less-than-famous bands. those of you who’ve been around a while will remember videos featuring grizzly bear, fleet foxes, and a few others. check out our archives for more. anyway, i was intrigued by what i heard, but i was not converted to a fan. why? their music is often dischordant and the lead singer tends to go off on strange flights of fancy. i normally don’t mind dischordant music, but this was a little much. i liked a lot of what i heard, but i wasn’t completely sold.

in my opinion, this video is not really representative of what you hear on their albums. it seems to me he (dave) allowed the ladies to stretch their wings a bit here. i think (and i asked my friend to confirm) that dave tends to make the musical decisons on most songs/albums. this seems an exception. i’m glad he made the exception because you get to see more of what they offer musically. the change in tone is not only due to the ladies. the other songs i’ve heard from their recent album ‘bitte orca’ are different from what i’d heard previously. for me, it’s a welcome change. i’m strongly considering purchasing this album. so, all that said, i hope you check this out, and i hope you enjoy it.
