K’naan - In the Beginning

The end of 2009 can’t come fast enough. Like many, this hasn’t been the best of my 22 years. There were three people got me through; Nas, Talib Kweli and K’naan. Since Your Daily Crack has had posts on the first two, I thought I’d give you something from the latter. This particular song is the first I heard from K’naan, “In the Beginning” (appropriately titled I know).

I came across K’naan while finishing my minor in Black World Studies. I was researching the East African country Somalia, which is where he hails from. For those of you that don’t know, Somalia has been torn by a civil war for the last two decades. Here in the States the general knowledge of Somalia is that of poverty, pirates and bloodshed but then I discovered the poetry. Somalia is a Nation of Poets and K’naan is exactly that. Luckily for us he express that poetry in English. For me, he is the most refreshing voice in hip-hop and since his infamous song “Waving Flag” became the World Cup Anthem; I can only hope that everyone will awaken to his voice.
