ak-momo - greasy spoon
ak-momo are a swedish duo whose sole album, ‘return to ny,’ was released in 2004.their music, produced primarily on the optigan , the mellotron , and the orchestron (those sound like transformers, but they are actually electronic keyboards), provides a haunting backdrop for vocalist a.k. von malmborg’s ethereal voice. what interests me about their sound is how subtly dark it is. there is something playfully seductive about a.k.’s singing, but it also inspires a sense of foreboding. the single ‘women to control’ is another example of this. the music is gorgeous, yet it has an unmistakably sinister edge. that aside, there is much to enjoy. ak-momo have a well-crafted vintage sound that is so different from most music you hear these days that you can’t help but pay attention. unfortunately, i wasn’t able to find the lyrics. each time i listen to the song i try to decipher whether they are meeting for the first or last time. in either case, it sounds like she leaves him with nothing. it’s as though she only seduced him to break his heart.
