Van Hunt - Who Will Love Me in Winter

I hate the winter.  It brings back memories of growing up in philly wearing long johns (why the hell were they called long johns??), boots that always would fill up with snow, down coats that would get holes and lose the feathers, gloves that attached to my coats because i always used to lose them, and sweating hard under the multiple layers of clothings.  Ever since I made atlanta my permament residence I have always had thoughts of moving back up north, but then the winter comes and it gets cold as hell in atlanta, but still 20 or more degrees warmer then up north.  In a perfect world I would live somewhere that didn’t get colder then 65 degrees, so I may need to work on that.

I also do not like the winter because I do not enjoy having to hibernate and sit in the house.  I haven’t really been anywhere since saturday so I’ve been getting very antsy.  So today I went out to finally buy Freaks & Geeks on DVD and bought a box of Blue Moon Winter Ale.  However, instead of enjoying my night I began to have those winter memories and regrets about the many mistakes that I have made dealing with relationships.  This involved a long conversation with one of my friends about regrets.  So I attempted to capture my own feelings with a song.

Van Hunt is one of my favorite artists.  I am most likely his top listener on last.fm.  But I will leave a small disclaimer, he had about 6 songs on my sleep mix that I played every night for about a year.  I had the opportunity to see him in concert a little after his “On the Jungle Floor” Tour at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta.  I’ve been to a lot of concerts in my 26 years, but that was hands down one of the greatest concert experiences of my life.  I felt like I was having an experience similar to those people in Minnesota that got to see Prince in his early days at First Ave.  His albums are excellent, but don’t hold a candle to his live shows.  Everything was perfect about that performance and I really can’t even put it into words.

“Who Will Love Me in Winter” is a beautiful poetic song dealing with mistakes that a person makes in a relationship due to their own ego and search for something new/different.  I can’t say enough about these lyrics so I will really just let you read them on your own.  There are so many aspects of this song that I love musically also.  The vocals are great in all areas from the lead, backing, and the lo-fi emotional singing towards the end.  They even bust out the harmonica reminiscent of a classic stevie wonder song.

Enjoy and if you ever get an opportunity, please see Van Hunt in concert.

Send up a smile for me, baby, I say to the rising flame
A dynamic woe blows in with the cold
And brings back the loneliness again
Your voice it haunts my nature
With words that I use to make you bleed
With one hand and my imagination I thought I’d never need for anything

But my spaceship crashed against the wall
My neighbor’s grass ain’t so green after all
I wouldn’t have a second thought ‘bout the fall
But I’m wondering who will love me in winter…

Delusions of grandeur misled my adventurous spirit
Love of the unknown rolls like a stone above my contentment
The autumn leaves fall from the trees
And hold me captive with a dance in the air
And I know with the passing of these, I must find love from somewhere

Spaceship crashed against the wall
My neighbor’s grass ain’t so green after all
I wouldn’t have a second thought ‘bout the fall
But I’m wondering who will love me in winter…

I wouldn’t have a thought bout the fall
But I’m wondering who will love me in winter…

Spaceship crashed against the wall
My neighbor’s grass ain’t so green after all
I wouldn’t have a second thought ‘bout the fall
But I’m wondering who will love me in winter…
