Foreign Exchange - Daykeeper ft. Muhsinah

this is a song i can’t listen to only once. it gets in my system. when i listen to it i imagine the music slowly drifting through my veins. i can almost feel the lyrics sliding along my skin. it’s a sensuous experience. more often than not, the music i listen to evokes images (i think i may suffer from a mild form or synesthesia). for example, when i listen to ‘greasy spoon’ i see things. sometimes i see a black and white video of a car traveling down a two-lane highway. the camera is focused on a woman’s arm which she waves languidly through the car window. on other occasions i see a singer in an old nightclub who beguiles her audience with her sultry voice, her striking appearance, and her seductive charms. she’s even more dangerous than she is beautiful.

daykeeper evokes its own imagery, but it does much more than that. when phonte and muhsinah sing, something within me moves. it’s almost as if the i merge with the music and my entire body sings along. simply thinking of the song or singing it myself without the music has the same effect. when i began writing, i thought i would focus on song’s sound or feel, but i don’t know why those things make this particular song so appealing. i’ve heard other songs that i like more, that speak to me through other channels, but i don’t feel them. the listening experience, though satisfying, is limited to the usual auditory and visual experience. daykeeper is interesting because it reaches me through an alternate avenue and touches me in a altogether different way.

-the skinny miracle

I can’t sleep at night
Cause they won’t see me
Running from the daylight
To where she keeps me

And when the sun rises, she watches over me

Waiting for the daylight
Cause then she’ll keep me
In the safety of her arms
She never leaves me

And when the sun rises, she watches over me

He tells me all his secrets
He thinks nobody knows
We lay together in daylight
I love him so

And when the sun rises, he watches over me

It’s not like it was before
And she can’t keep me anymore
She loves me?

Why don’t you stay here with me
I pray that our morning won’t leave
Let me keep you, then you’ll see
Don’t hide the truth from yourself
It’s you that I’ll love and protect
Let me keep you here with me
