Animal Collective - My Girls i’d heard about animal collective a while back. i sampled some of their music and didn’t find anything of interest. today i was in a store and heard two ac songs that immediately grabbed my attention: ‘my girls’ and ‘bluish’ (thank you, mr. iphone!). both songs have a nice vibe to them. they actually remind of an updated ‘pet sounds’. the vocal harmonies are paired with an interesting and complementary soundscape. the result are melodic and rhythmic (and catchy) songs that would make brian wilson proud. if you haven’t checked out ‘pet sounds’ or wilson’s album ‘smile,’ you should. those albums contain songs of a similar strain. honestly, i prefer ‘my girls’ to virtually any song i’ve heard from ‘smile,’ but that album has it’s own virtues. some people immediately think ‘weird’ when they hear animal collective. however, these songs demonstrate that they can create perfect pop songs. admittedly they are more in the feist vein than madonna’s, but all the requirements are there. you can dance to it, it’s happy-happy-fun fun, and it’s…good.

Is it much to admit I need A solid soul and the blood I bleed With a little girl, and by my spouse I only want a proper house I don’t care for fancy things Or to take part in a precious race And children cry for the one who has A real big heart and a father’s grace I don’t mean to seem like I care about material things like a social status I just want four walls and adobe slabs for my girls
