Beirut- In the Mausoleum

i like this song because it has a nice energy to it. i also dig lead singer zach condon’s voice- it adds something unique to the song. mostly, though, i like this song for reasons that are only tangentially related to the music. i discovered beirut while perusing a site on which you can watch videos of artists performing as they walk through the streets of paris, france. at one point the site administrators decided to take the show to new york, and we got to see a few of the american bands perform in their back yard. i’d seen zach and friends perform on the street and in a random café in france, but it was their performance in a small apartment in brooklyn that really grabbed me. the drummers, the violinists, the cellist, and the other band members were scattered throughout the apartment playing their instruments with fervor. the percussionists used trash cans, countertops, and even a watermelon to provide the rhythm. it was a fun, energetic, and engaging performance by a group of people who clearly enjoyed what they do. that and the music itself really sold me. check the video out here.
Time travels to learn
your secret life
in your mausoleum
And Berlin
is so ugly in the morning light
but with them
I could never feel so right
-the skinny miracle
