minmi- shiki no uta

you never know where you’ll come across good music. this song is from an anime that aired a few years ago called samurai champloo. anime series and movies have proven a wonderful source for music. samurai champloo, which i never finished, introduced me to an equally wonderful song called ‘battlecry’ by nujabes and shing02. cowboy bebop is full of wonderful music composed by yoko kanno, from the opening theme ‘tank’ to ‘green bird’ and ‘rain.’ ghost in the shell: stand alone complex, fantastic children, princess mononoke, and outlaw star also contain songs i enjoy. suffice to say, i have a nice stash of japanese music to draw from when the mood strikes me.

i selected this song because it is one of my favorite discoveries. for some reason i didn’t expect something like this from a japanese artist, particularly this one. minmi is known more for soca/raggae music than this. if you’re surprised at japan’s fascination with caribbean music, you shouldn’t be. if you’re curious to see how deep that fascination runs, search youtube for the japanese dancehall queen. hi.la.ri.ous. i digress (seriously- it’s hilarious). i’d heard a lot of chinese and korean pop artists and a few japanese pop artists but nothing like this. like i said, you never know what you’ll find or where you’ll find it.
