Teddy Pendergrass’s “Turn Off the Lights” is a standard that just never gets old. A former Bluenote of Melvin Harold and the Bluenotes, he launched his solo career in 1977. A 1982 car accident in Philly left Teddy Bear paralyzed from the waist down w/ limited use of his arms but that didn’t stop the man. He has released several albums, appeared in a gospal musical and written an autobiography in that time.
This song is one of those super sexual, hyper masculine soul songs of the 70s. With lyrics like this, its easy to see why his stage performances were oft talked about. Don’t it just make you wanna turn off the lights?
