Madonna - Justify My Love
Let’s take a moment to put aside Madonna’s personal life and focus on her music. Whether you like Madonna or not, there is no denying that her music is timeless. She is called the queen of pop for a reason and what makes her even more great is her versatility, having the ability to change her music according to current trends or just deviating from that entirely and trying something new. Madonna is also quite prone to controversy, both in her personal life and in her music (again, we’ll just focus on the latter). One great example of this is her music video for her single, Justify My Love. When the video was released it was banned by MTV, which was still pretty influential at the time (yes, that was a stab at MTV). The video is deeply erotic and sexually charged, covering nearly everything from voyeurism, homosexuality, bisexuality, S&M, to roleplay, cross dressing and partial nudity. Watching the video, it’s pretty easy to see why it caused quite a stir. What makes the video even more evocative is the lyrics. Madonna sounds sensual and tempting each time she sings, “Wanting, needing, waiting/ For you to justify my love.” It’s almost as if she’s singing to the listener, urging them to join her in her world of sexual pleasures and fantasies.
