Jamiroquai - Seven Days In Sunny June

Jamiroquai

I was planning on posting a different song this morning but this track caught my attention when searching through my iTunes files. The feel of it better matches up with me this morning.

Jamiroquai is an English Acid Jazz/Funk/Disco band that has been around since the early 90s. While the name of the group is more synonymous for front-man Jay Kay (the guy in all the crazy hats), Jamiroqui is definitely a band complete with rotating musicians. Jay Kay formed the band when he didn’t get the gig as lead singer of The Brand New Heavies. Talk about a silver lining.

The band is probably best known stateside for their 1996 single Virtual Insanity. I know that’s when I first heard them (nevermind the fact that I was only 7 when their first album was released). The band has had many musical influences and as such their sound has evolved a lot since 1992. This song is off their 6th album Dynamite. This is one of my favorite tracks by the band so I hope you enjoy it!

PS….if you’re too young (or too old) to remember Virtual Insanity, check the video here.

Jamiroquai - Seven Days In Sunny June

The papers you’ve arranged
In a sense they’re strange
They speak to me like constellations as we lie here
There’s a magic I can’t hold
Your smile of honey gold
And that you never seem to be in short supply of

*Chorus*
Oooooh
So baby let’s get it on
Drinkin’ wine and killin’ time
Sitting in the summer sun
You know
I’ve wanted you so long
Why’d you have to drop that bomb on me

The lazy days
Crazy dolls
You said we’ve been friends for too long

Seven days in sunny June
But long enough to bloom
The flowers on the sunlight dress you wore in spring
The way we laughed as one
And then you dropped the bomb
But I know you too long for us to have a thing

*Chorus 2X*

Gotta get this
The stories in your eyes
Tell of silent wings
You fly away on

Seven days in sunny June
But long enough to bloom
The flowers on that sunbeamed dress you wore in spring (Yeah Yeah)
The way we laughed as one
Why did you drop that bomb on me

*Chorus*

Could it be this
The honey suckled dancing you’d seem to show me
Could it be this
For seven days in June I wasn’t lonely
Could it be this
You never gave me time to say I love you
Could it be this
I know you don’t believe me but it’s so true

Don’t walk away from me girl (4x)
I read the stories in your eyes

If you’ve been telling me we’ve been friends for too long (Yeah)
Why’d you wanna drop the bomb
Telling me we’ve been friends for too long
Why’d you go and drop the bomb
You tell me that we’ve been friends for too long (Yeah)

Andre 3000 f/ Norah Jones - Take Off Your Cool

Andre 3000

Oh Andre 3000 - how I love you. Let me count the ways:

You’ze a funky mofo

You wear pearls. And plaid sweater vests. And ponchos. And safari hats. And suspenders. Pretty much all things counter-intuitive of a black urban male.

I loved you in Four Brothers. Yup - I really did.

You have about a million alias. And everyone knows having an alias is cool.

You play the violin.

You’re a vegetarian. While not for me, its still cool beans.

Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was my introduction to southern rap. And what better introduction then that.

Did I mention you’ze a funky mofo?

I could go on but who has time for that? The Love Below is prolly one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. Its funky, its jazzy, its funny and its groovy. I love everything from the unexpected elements (falsetto singing - really?) to Andre’s always entertaining phrasing. Its been well over 5 years since the album was released and I am STILL tickled everytime I listen to “Where Are My Panties?”.

Take Off Your Cool is a silky smooth track thats more instrumentals then vocals. I picked it mainly because I think its something most people would glance over on their Outkast voyage. I like all of the facets of Outkast and I hope that this is one you can enjoy as well!

Andre 3000 f/ Norah Jones - Take Off Your Cool

Hey yaaa… Ba-doo-baaaa-ba-doo-baaaaa [repeat 2X]

[Norah Jones]
Baby, take off your cool
I wanna see you, I wanna see you
Baby, don’t be so cool
I wanna see you, I wanna see you

[Andre 3000]
Baby, take off your cool
I want to get to know you
(Take off your cool)

James Brown  - Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag

James Brown

I am posting this song for one reason and one reason only - mama’s got a brand new bag! I woke up this morning with a pep in my step and a smile on my face. At this point you may be asking yourself what the new bag is? Well don’t hurt yourself cuz it isn’t anything to philosophical. I LITERALLY got a new bag - orange alligator skin! And the ish is F-I-E-R-C-E.

I know what you’re thinking - orange?!?! Gator?!?! Well…for those of you that know me my wardrobe can be a bit on the conservative side. I have a lot of navy, gray, black and white and love simple clothing. What I also love are crazy shoes. I’ve never been very into purses but I decided yesterday I need at least one that pops for those days when I need a little flare. And what goes better with flare then FUNK! You know a song is iconic when not only is the title a popular colloquialism (gambling, shopping, lifestyle change), but no matter how few times you’ve heard, it automatically pops into your head in certain situations. I’ve been humming it all morning while I enjoy my new purse so here it is for ya’ll to hum along to with me. Enjoy!

James Brown - Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag

Come here sister…..Papa’s in the swing
He ain’t too hip…about that new breed babe
He ain’t no drag
Papa’s got a brand new bag

Come here mama….and dig this crazy scene
He’s not too fancy….but his line is pretty clean
He ain’t no drag.
Papa’s got a brand new bag

He’s doing the Jerk….
He’s doing the Fly
Don’t play him cheap ‘cause you know he ain’t shy
He’s doing the Monkey, the Mashed Potatoes, Jump back Jack, See you later
alligator.

Come here sister
Papa’s in the swing
He ain’t too hip now
but I can dig that new breed babe;
He ain’t no drag
He’s got a brand new bag

Oh papa! He’s doing the Jerk
Papa…he’s doing the Jerk
He’s doing the twist … just like this,
He’s doing the Fly ev’ry day and ev’ry night
The thing’s….like the Boomerang.
Hey….come on
Hey! Hey…..come on
Hey! Hey….he’s pu tight…out of sight…
Come on. Hey! Hey!

Kashmere Stage Band - Zero Point

i WISH i played in a band like this when i was in high school.  the funkiest thing my band teacher let us play was the star wars symphony.  believe it or not kashmere stage band is a high school band from houstan texas whose music teacher, Conrad Johnson, decided to have his students play in the style of Otis Redding and other funky bands form the late 60s into the 70s.  unfortunately, i can’t find any videos of the group, because they also put on a full show with choreographed dance moves.

two of my major loves in life are music and education and this is simply one of the greatest stories i’ve ever heard.  the teacher connected directly with the students and helped them to achieve things beyond their imagination.  the kashmere stage band went on to record 8 studio albums and have been a prized possession among crate diggers worldwide.  now-again records a subsidiary of stones throw released a compilation album of their songs a couple years back called texas thunder soul.  check it out and enjoy!

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey - Minsato Le, Mi Dayihom

i have a ton of random african music from all over the continent.  ranging from african salsa, high life, afrobeat, and straight up psychedelic funk like the track above.  this song was featured on Luaka Bop’s - World Psychedelic Classics 3 - Love’s a Real Thing.  go out and get it the whole cd is hot.  the funkiness of this song blew my mind, the drumming, guitar, and bass playing is just free and funky.  when i ran into the video online my mind was blown and taken straight to a psychedelic haze of funky ass puppetterring Benin.  my muppet/puppet love is showing, but i don’t care.  also the female puppet is getting it!!

Can - Vitamin C

many of you will probably recognize this song from many breakdancing sets.  it is one of the most popular breaking songs because the drumming and the groove are crazy.  some songs with dope breakbeats kind of suck when you actually hear the full song, but not vitamin c.  everytime i hear this i must hear the whole thing.  if i hear it in the set or part of it in a commercial i must go back and listen to the whole song.  i love it.

can is an experimental rock band from west germany formed in 1968.  due to my ignorant ass public education i honestly did not know a damn thing about germany growing up besides hitler.  i didn’t know that they were exporting dope ass music like this.  the song has some of the best drumming i’ve heard on a studio released track, a deep bass line, and the vocals catch you immediately.  i’m not sure exactly what he was referring to when he’s talking about vitamin c, but the song seems to be about a spoiled girl and maybe he’s saying that she’s losing something essential to her being… blah blah blah, i don’t know.  any thoughts?  enjoy

Her daddy got a big aeroplane,
Her mommy holds all the family cash,
A beautiful blows, I stay at the corner,
She is living in and out of tune.

Hey you,
You’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing your vitamin C.
Hey you,
You’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing your vitamin C,
Your vitamin C.

And at Christmas riding on her pony
Or she is stepping on the pigman’s head,
A beautiful blows, I stay at the corner,
She is living in and out of tune.

Hey you,
You’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing your vitamin C.
Hey you,
You’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing your vitamin C,
Your vitamin C.

Hey you,
You’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing your vitamin C.
Hey you,
You’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing, you’re losing your vitamin C.

Rufus and Chaka Khan - Do You Love What You Feel

this song is just funky and fun.  chaka khan got her start in the band rufus where they put out many classics such as ‘tell me something good’ and ‘sweet thing.’  like all her other songs the vocals are superb.  the song is simply about the exciting feeling of being with someone.  it’s not too deep at all lyrically, but the emotion is what love can give you.  there’s not too much you really say about it or even take the time to say about it, cuz it’s just a hell of a feeling.  i’m going to pause here though and hold back my cynical thoughts.  so enjoy the song and think about a moment that you felt like this or your current state.

also, if you enjoy the song check out the video nothing too technical, just fun

[Chorus:]
Do you love what you feel
Cause I love what you do to me
Do you love what you feel
Cause I love what you do to me

Babe, when you’re holdin’ me
Somehow you seem to set me free
And when I dance with you, romance with you
Is all I sing

[Chorus]

I’ve spent so many nights
Just taking fights within myself
Until you came to me
And held me like nobody else

[Chorus]

Tell me ‘bout the way you like it
Anything you want is right
You and I are close together
Your lovin’ gets me feeling better

I wanna dance all
I wanna dance all
I wanna dance all night

Everytime you’re holdin’ me

Bootsy’s Rubber Band - Munchies For Your Love

Since I gave you the ‘punk ass cupid’ mix earlier today, I wanted to leave you with the epitome of a funk love ballad.  This song is a slow burner and has a crazy ending.  I live and breathe all things related to parliament funkadelic.  I’m a fiend for their material.  Bootsy Collins is one of the more well known side men in the Parliament-Funkadelic camp and is still seen these days buggin out with Snoop Dogg.  Out of all of his songs, ‘Munchies For Your Love’ is one of my favorites it’s odd, funky, and sexy all at the same time.  Enjoy and I hope you can share this with someone special.

Your love is more than good its
Good, and then its kinda fun, its like
Staying up after bedtime
When your still just a kid
Your love is two for one its
Sweet, and then its kinda fun, its like a
Whole lot of good thangs
Rolled up into one
Candy-Like love

Your love is a kind of special treat
Oh, personal stash

James Pants - Crystal Lite (feat. Deon Davis)

Initially when I heard of and saw James Pants, I wrote him off. I mean, look at him. Who would have ever guessed that such a dork, well let me not say dork, someone with such dorky tendencies could ever be one bad ass producer? I guess I should have known though. He’s on Stones Throw Records and we already know their history when it comes to producers.

So when I finally decided to listen to his debut album, Welcome, I immediately fell in love with the lead single, Crystal Lite. Pants’ production is not like his Stones Throw counterparts. This is not head nodding music. This is 80s funk, synthesizer thumping dance music. When you throw a joint like this on, wall flowers get trampled over and bodies get to vibing. The vocals added by Deon Davis definitely set this track off. There isn’t much information known on Deon but his providing vocals throughout Welcome keeps you wanting more from the mysterious vocalist. With a voice that seems to be the offspring of Cameo and Prince, Deon rocks this song.

I highly recommend James Pants’ album to any lover of dirty funk beats and soulful vocals and don’t judge this slightly awkward producer by his cover. Or his clothes.

Lyrics
Baby why you tripping on me? You know I’m tryna build a church.
We’ve been together so long (so long), We’ve been broke for so long (so long).
Don’t you want to put diamond cubes in your lemondade?
Got me singing, Oooh baby baby, Oooh baby baby, Oooh baby baby, Oooh baby baby.
Got me singing, Oooh baby baby, Oooh baby baby, Oooh baby baby, Oooh baby baby.

Why you tripping on me? You know I’m tryna build a church.
We make the people pay our way (our way).
So we can have a brighter day.
Don’t you want to put diamond cubes in your lemonade?
You got me singing Oooh baby baby (9x)
Hey, hey hey, Hey hey
Girl, why you tripping on me? You know I’m tryna build a church.

non+ - Go!

i’ve been debating for a while what exactly to post from either philip owusu or robin hannibal.  their album is a personal favorite of mine.  since being exposed to them i have stalked and hunted down any other project that they have worked on, remixed, or group they are part of.  this includes the boomclap bachelors, owusu & green, quadron, non+, and various other remixes and production credits.  matter of fact as i write this right now i still do not have a clue of which song to post… i love them all.  with their first album they draw a lot of inspiration from two favorites of mine, j dilla and prince.  they made this sort of new millenium funk, new wave, and soul project that i still can’t get enough of.  i really love hearing soulful vocals over crazy ass electronic tracks; the combination is a mixture of all types of music i love.

so… after going back and forth for another half hour i decided to post Go! by Non+.  this is an album that you won’t be able to find at all… unless you live in Japan.  trust i have tried.  matter of fact if you do please email me ASAP.  i only have a bunch of the tracks because they were posted on their myspace page as download links a while back.

non+ features robin hannibal (owusu & hannibal, boomclap bachelors, quadron), ronni vindahl (boomclap bachelors), and tuco ifill.  they are like a dance pop electronic blah blah blah type of group.  the song go features a driving kick drum, funky bass, synths galore, and some ambient sounding vocals that carry you through.  i honestly don’t even know what the hell they are talking about because i am still stuck in the beauty of the music.  i’ll get to the lyrics at some point.  enjoy
