Gutevolk- Hinagiku

oh ho, ho, this song is great. i’m happy i came across it. i saw it in a game trailer of all places. it really caught my attention so i thought i’d take time to find out who made it. i’ve enjoyed spending the last hour or so going through gutevolk’s catalog. it’s like christmas.

Nosaj Thing- Reckoner Remix (originally by Radiohead)

i was a bit leery about listening to this remix for two reasons: (1) this is one of my favoring songs ever; and (2) i read that nosaj is similar to flying lotus, and i didn’t like flying lotus’ remix of this song at all. now, i admit number two is unfair, but it made me skeptical nonetheless. anyway, i listened to it, and i like it. he left enough of the original to keep the appeal, but he tweaked it enough to call it his own. excellent stuff. enjoy.

Balam Acab- See Birds

when i listen to this song, i imagine hearing it in movie credits or something. a thriller or something. i don’t know. i tend toward the grandiose, so i can definitely see this in some haunting film about murder in the dark streets of some ultra-urban metropolis. death. death and destruction, i say. actually, it isn’t so bleak. it’s a little dark, yes, but it’s got a nice vibe to it.

Sarah Fimm- Great Wide Open

how’s this for playing with your emotions? so, calidre taught you how to make it rain panties. well, now you’re going to learn how to get someone to cling to you asking, ‘why am i crying?’ here’s the thing, you can’t listen to this while you’re under the influence of an hallucinogen. i understand that’s how some of you get down, but i’m telling you that you want don’t to be trippin’ when the electronic emo-whale-dolphins start moaning in the background. that might be a little too intense for both of you (or all of you, depending on how you roll). but, if you want a little snugglin’ and a little existential hyper-awareness, this is it. trust me. i’m not only a blogger, i’m a love doctor. enjoy.

Marissa Nadler - Ghost And Lovers

I started listening to Marissa Nadler when someone posted a song by her on tumblr (I don’t remember who). Her music immediately caught my attention, but not entirely; she just came off as one of those music artists you hear, think you like, but for some reason still unsure of. I read reviews of her albums, which were all well received, and decided to download some tracks by her, which I liked. I’m still listening to her, and it seems the more I do the more I like her music. In fact, Marissa has become one of my top favorite people to listen to.

Marissa’s music is a mixture of folk and ambient. It’s not angsty, but often her songs has a sad, nostalgic, dream-like quality to it. Her voice flows easily and never hits a high note. It sort of reminds me of a shawl on a clothesline, blown by a gentle wind. It’ll mesmerize you, but in a way you won’t entirely understand. One of my favorite songs by Marissa is Ghost And Lovers. Enjoy. Sorry, lyrics are unavailable.

non+ - Go!

i’ve been debating for a while what exactly to post from either philip owusu or robin hannibal.  their album is a personal favorite of mine.  since being exposed to them i have stalked and hunted down any other project that they have worked on, remixed, or group they are part of.  this includes the boomclap bachelors, owusu & green, quadron, non+, and various other remixes and production credits.  matter of fact as i write this right now i still do not have a clue of which song to post… i love them all.  with their first album they draw a lot of inspiration from two favorites of mine, j dilla and prince.  they made this sort of new millenium funk, new wave, and soul project that i still can’t get enough of.  i really love hearing soulful vocals over crazy ass electronic tracks; the combination is a mixture of all types of music i love.

so… after going back and forth for another half hour i decided to post Go! by Non+.  this is an album that you won’t be able to find at all… unless you live in Japan.  trust i have tried.  matter of fact if you do please email me ASAP.  i only have a bunch of the tracks because they were posted on their myspace page as download links a while back.

non+ features robin hannibal (owusu & hannibal, boomclap bachelors, quadron), ronni vindahl (boomclap bachelors), and tuco ifill.  they are like a dance pop electronic blah blah blah type of group.  the song go features a driving kick drum, funky bass, synths galore, and some ambient sounding vocals that carry you through.  i honestly don’t even know what the hell they are talking about because i am still stuck in the beauty of the music.  i’ll get to the lyrics at some point.  enjoy

Animal Collective - Winter’s Love

Animal Collective sounds are naive and liberated.  They write the most ambient songs, filled with chirps and string slips, animal noises, and taps and hissing.  Although I’m crazy about Animal Collective, it can be a bit much listening to an entire album without breaks.  For me, its the perfect group to break up a mix.  Adding a couple Animal Collecive songs perks up your ears and keep a mix from taking itself too seriously.  I like to pair Animal Collective songs up against Pet Sounds, Astrud Gilberto, Air, Juno Soundrack tracks, The Byrds Preflyte, The Lost in Translation soundtrack, etc…  Basically, things that are playful and either stripped down or ambient sounding.

I’m not sure how I would think of this song if I didnt know the title, but knowing that ‘winter’ is in the title, I complete associate it with your average post-holiday winter day.  I see my breath and hear the echoes against the snow when i hear it.

If you like WINTER’S LOVE you’ll also love…

Leaf House — also by Animal Collective on the Sung Tongs album

- ex libris

I love this light in winter time,
The frost cakes in the carpet
in winter time we’ll have our ways
tombstones the mean belong in
No falls snowfalls that ruin my day
It’s masked up from the street wire
and winter’s glow where could she be
She’s warm underneath my pocket
Just a calm and modern day
In early, early morning
Rush to her, and rush to him,
Am I a better person?
even in the whole take on
the loss is better said
I pulled the boy out of above
She made that boy a man

Owusu & Hannibal - Blue Jay

This album defined the year 2007 for me.  I stumbled upon this group listening to Rewind 5 compilation where they did a dope cover of the Beach Boys - Caroline, No.  The cover is really spaced out and sensual similar to a lot of ambient music, but with excellent vocals over top.  Their creativity shined on this cover and I immediately began searching for their album “Living with…”

Basically they are two guys from Copenhagen, who bonded over a mutual love of Sly Stone (***psss the artist below).  The group put the album together in about a year working on it 50/50 in each others home studios and recording the vocals in Phillip Owusu’s grandmothers bathroom.

On to Blue Jay, I love how the track comes on with the almost drunken drums with the guitar being sucked in a straw.  Phillip Owusu has such a dope style of singing.  It’s like subtly soulful, he’s not oversinging or undersinging, but hitting it perfectly.  You can feel everything that he is saying.  The harmony on the chorus is beautiful.  Phillip Owusu makes me want to sing again, I just can’t get enough of his style.  This is merely a sample of how beautiful the whole album is.

Tune in later and I will post some tracks that Phillip Owusu has remixed and some tracks from Robin Hannibal’s other groups Boomclap Bachelors and Non+

THE CITY SEEMS AT PEACE TONIGHT
THE CITY SLEEPS I RUN THE LIGHTS
FROM THE EAST TO THE WEST SIDE
IT’S AN ALL NIGHT RIDE

A GARBAGE TRUCK HONKS THE HORN
GREAT MINDS COLLIDE A TREATY TORN
NO ALLEGIANCE SO SKINTIGHT
NOT THIS LATE AT NIGHT

I HEARD HOW SOON THE DAY COMES
BLUE JAY GOT ME ON THE RUN

I THINK ABOUT I THOUGHT IT THROUGH
I READ THE GREEKS LIKE CHINESE DO
FROM THE BOTTOM LOOKING UP
IT’S A DEATH DEFYING DROP

I BREAK THE GLASS I KEEP THE SCORE
TAG THE HALLS AND CORRIDORS
I WORK AT NIGHT I WORK THE NIGHT
I WORK THE LONG NIGHT

I HEARD HOW SOON THE DAY COMES
BLUE JAY GOT ME ON THE RUN
