SXSW Music Roundup: Brazilian Style - Part 2/3

The Name -You Want it Back Now

Another song I was listening to on my way to NJ yesterday was this gem. It has an awesome electronic beat in the beginning, with a house feel and then some rock. This song is just the shit. With such a good message, and a great breakdown around 1:03. Wait for it…..

Violent Kin

Violent Kin - Velvet Hideout

Still combing through many tracks from SXSW and ran into this gem. Part of the Western Canadian Artists, Violent Kin has a really cool sound that almost makes it sound like it could be a soundtrack segment for True Blood, or another conquest type of movie, this track really brings out the essence of any day. It has a raw feeling to it with a mixture between rock, blues, electric, it’s sure to hit an interest in you. You can find out more about them at the links below.

Sarah Fimm- Great Wide Open

how’s this for playing with your emotions? so, calidre taught you how to make it rain panties. well, now you’re going to learn how to get someone to cling to you asking, ‘why am i crying?’ here’s the thing, you can’t listen to this while you’re under the influence of an hallucinogen. i understand that’s how some of you get down, but i’m telling you that you want don’t to be trippin’ when the electronic emo-whale-dolphins start moaning in the background. that might be a little too intense for both of you (or all of you, depending on how you roll). but, if you want a little snugglin’ and a little existential hyper-awareness, this is it. trust me. i’m not only a blogger, i’m a love doctor. enjoy.

VAST- Lost

i though about posting ‘touched’ instead, but i decided to go a different route. i took a chance and assumed that most people hadn’t heard this song. i really enjoy it. the music combines airy, ethereal sounds with a (somewhat) driving rhythm. it’s a combination i’m quite fond of. i particularly enjoy the part where the singers says ‘i need to get back home.’ the change there adds a nice element to the song. it’s not the happiest of songs, but i think it’s a good one. enjoy.

There’s no angels here
Just a sun to light the way
To places where my friends
Turn to strangers

Oh my lover

On a long long empty road
Ooh sweet lover, I got lost

There’s no angels here

Just a light to lead the way
There’s no innocence
Only strangers

Oh my lover

On a long long empty road
Oh sweet lover, I got lost
and I
I need to get back home

Santigold- Hometown Glory (Adele Cover)

santigold

I hate reblogging songs. I really do. But as I scrolled the dashboard today, M-IN-E had posted this track. I gave it a listen (I had to - I love all things Adele) and can I just say….DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPENESS!!! This junk is fire and it is my duty to spread it to the masses.

So…thank you M-IN-E and I’m sorry for swinging on your jock strap so hard today. But uber-thanks for bringing my attention to this song. My love for Santigold has just grown like the Grinch’s heart…3 sizes in one day.

Enjoy!

Santigold- Hometown Glory (Adele Cover)

I’ve been walking in the same way as I did
And missing out the cracks in the pavement
And tutting my heel and strutting my feet
“Is there anything I can do for you dear? Is there anyone I could call?
No, and thank you, please madam, I ain’t lost, just wandering”

Round my hometown, memories are fresh
Round my hometown, ooh, the people I’ve met
Are the wonders of my world, are the wonders of my world
Are the wonders of this world, are the wonders and now

I like it in the city when the air is so thick and opaque
I love it to see everybody in short skirts, shorts and shades
I like it in the city when two worlds collide
You get the people and the government
Everybody taking different sides

Shows that we ain’t gonna stand shit
Shows that we are united
Shows that we ain’t gonna take it
Shows that we ain’t gonna stand shit
Shows that we are united

Round my hometown, memories are fresh
Round my hometown, ooh, the people I’ve met

Are the wonders of my world, are the wonders of my world
Are the wonders of this world, are the wonders of my world
Of my world, yeah, of my world, of my world, yeah

Human League - Don’t You Want Me

HL

This song is a standard selection for any reputable 80s party. It has everything you can ask of a quality 80s song - synthesizers, angst and catchy lyrics.

I was watching Center Stage for the first time a few nights ago and…I don’t know why but this song reminds me of the movie so much. Was it playing in the background of some scene? Or did I just really think it fit in?

Who knows? I like this song though so I decided to post it today! There’s also a really fun mash up floating around out there called Don’t You Want My Bad Romance featuring the Lady Gaga hit. Check it out here. Just goes to show you the 80s will NEVER go away!

Enjoy!

Human League - Don’t You Want Me

You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
When I met you
I picked you out, I shook you up, and turned you around
Turned you into someone new
Now five years later on you’ve got the world at your feet
Success has been so easy for you
But don’t forget it’s me who put you where you are now
And I can put you back down too

(Chorus:)
Don’t, don’t you want me?
You know I can’t believe it when I hear that you won’t see me
Don’t, don’t you want me?
You know I don’t believe you when you say that you don’t need me
It’s much too late to find
You think you’ve changed your mind
You’d better change it back or we will both be sorry

Don’t you want me baby? Don’t you want me oh
Don’t you want me baby? Don’t you want me oh

I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
That much is true
But even then I knew I’d find a much better place
Either with or without you
The five years we have had have been such good times
I still love you
But now I think it’s time I lived my life on my own
I guess it’s just what I must do

(Chorus)

Don’t you want me baby? Don’t you want me oh
Don’t you want me baby? Don’t you want me oh

(Repeat four times and fade)

Rich Kidz - Patna Dem (Mad Decent Patna’s remix by DJA)

living in atlanta provides you with a continuous onslaught of hood rap.  some makes it out of the city, some gets stuck as atl one hit classics.  patna dem came out earlier this year and took over.  i’ve been here for almost 10 years and i still need translation for some of the stuff these kids say.

flashback: i remember when souljah boi first came out.  i was watching tv one’s roots marathon.  i got up to go get some food and uncharacteristically decided to turn on the radio.  when i heard the lyrics “soljah boi up in des do wa me crank dat wa me do, why me yooooouu… why me yoooooou…” i became upset that kizzy, kunta, and dem were speaking better english then atlanta teens.

anyway back to patna dem, i still don’t quite understand the song, they shout out a lot of different neighborhoods then start shouting out other stuff such as “true religion” so who knows.  this remix though makes the song for me, hood and electronic.  also ironically is done by artists in the two places i call home, atl and philly.  if you enjoy this go get the FREE ATL Remix album from Adult Swim

PPP (formerly the Platinum Pied Pipers) f/ Karma Stewart - On A Cloud

ppp

Oh my goodness this shit is so funky! It is that hot fire. I gotta gotta gotta thank my show So You Think You Can Dance cuz the choreographers always use some great music. I mean…that show is where I discovered Adele and Duffy and I can’t even tell you how many other songs. But this…this right here…..WOOOO. This is about to be on constant rotation in my crib.

With the amazing horns pushing this song forward and Karma Stewart’s AMAZING vocals, this song is an electro-funk-soul junkie’s dream. PPP - where have ya’ll been all my life? I’m sorry if I’m late on the scene, but ya’ll better believe I’m hitting up Amazon RIGHT now to grab some albums.

Oh - by the way - Karma Stewart is a new artist so if ya’ll like what you hear, pick up her EP here. Enjoy!

Sam Sparro - Black and Gold

sam sparro

I am always so late with these things, but better late then never I always say! I guess it also doesn’t help that I don’t listen to the radio or any other sources of new music. What can I say…my method for finding music I like hasn’t failed me yet so I won’t be changing anytime soon.

At any rate, I’m really enjoying this track right now. The Australian born singer has this Gnarls Barkley-esque thing going on that I’m really feeling. It’s a great song that can’t be pigeon-holed into any particular genre.

Whatever genre everyone decides to stick it into, I’ll be sitting over here enjoying it. You do the same!

-Calidre

ps - really love the lyrics! clever clever clever!

Sam Sparro - Black and Gold

If the fish swam out of the ocean
and grew legs and they started walking
and the apes climbed down from the trees
and grew tall and they started talking

and the stars fell out of the sky
and my tears rolled into the ocean
now i’m looking for a reason why
you even set my world into motion

‘cause if you’re not really here
then the stars don’t even matter
now i’m filled to the top with fear
but it’s all just a bunch of matter
‘cause if you’re not really here
then i don’t want to be either
i wanna be next to you
black and gold
black and gold
black and gold

i looked up into the night sky
and see a thousand eyes staring back
and all around these golden beacons
i see nothing but black

i feel a way of something beyond them
i don’t see what i can feel
if vision is the only validation
then most of my life isn’t real

‘cause if you’re not really here
then the stars don’t even matter
now i’m filled to the top with fear
but it’s all just a bunch of matter
‘cause if you’re not really here
then i don’t want to be either
i wanna be next to you
black and gold
black and gold
black and gold

Simian Mobile Disco - Hustler

i’m a big simian mobile disco fan.  i watched a good interview of them in the past where they were talking about how during their live shows they just fiddle around with all of the crazy computers so no two shows are the same.  the first ‘hustler’ video featured a circular rotating camera with girls kissing each other.  this one features…. uhh…. just watch yourself…
