Architecture in Helsinki - Do the Whirlwind

The top rated comment on youtube for this video reads, “This video makes me feel like I took an SNES cartridge, ground it up into fine pieces and snorted it.. it’s sweet!” I think that just about captures it.

Doves- Spellbound

doves

This song is my favorite off the new album, ‘Kingdom of Rust’. There is a yearning in their music that mirrors my own. It’s a sonic, heavily layered sound, with guitars and vocals that I can’t get enough of. I have to thank my college roommate for introducing me to doves (lost souls era) as well as other albums beyond the radio and shattering the musical microcosm I’d been trapped in for much too long. It was one of the best things that could have ever happened. Well done, Doves.

those eyes they transmit
all your loving
echos light into dark hearts
i would swear I’ve seen this, left beside me
your eyes they hypnotize

she keeps me here so spellbound
her love pulls me near to stranger ground
I’ve lost my mind there
this dark magic mirror, spellbound

a heart-shaped face
with words as cold as stone
i can’t believe this is my fate

she raised your head
now the night, it’s coming down
i accept this fate i accept my love you won’t be long
you keep me here so spellbound
your love pulls me near to sacred ground
i lost my mind there
this dark magic mirror, spellbound
and i can’t leave now
leave her now (x2)

she keeps me near so spellbound
her love pulls me near to stranger ground
i lost my mind there
this dark magic mirror, spellbound (x2)
so spellbound (x3)

Juelz Santana & Lil Wayne - Concrete Jungle

I made a post a while back, snow patrol - chasing cars, and now i’m back as a contributor to post on this site.  I love everything, well maybe not everything, but almost everything. I will try to post a variety of music that I enjoy. Feel free to comment, comment and last but not least COMMENT.

My first song is titled “Concrete Jungle” by Juelz Santana & Lil Wayne. This is not a new song but I thought it was a perfect song for my first post. I feel like dailycrack.net features a combination of different types of music. The “Concrete Jungle” is often described as the ghetto and you can find every and anything in the ghetto. I’d like to think of this blog as a ghetto where you can find a range of not only people but the music they play, the beats they make and the rhymes they say (ironically many find their daily crack in the ghetto).

Enjoy

Sister Gertrude Morgan - New World In My View (King Britt remix)

I had never heard of Sister Gertrude Morgan until last week’s episode of True Blood. It’s at the end of the episode, right as Vampire Bill is about to meet The Queen. It’s a pretty great, albeit brief, sequence. The song is gospel, but it’s open to interpretation. In True Blood, it sums up the insanity taking place in Bon Temps. For a person who has never watched the show, it could be about a sudden change in your life and/or a whole new perspective of familiar things around you. Brilliant. Enjoy!

New World in My View - Sister Gertrude Morgan (King Britt remix)

I got the new world in my view
On my journey I pursue
I said I’m running, running for the city
I got the new world in my view

I got the new world in my view
On my journey I pursue
Lord I’m running, running for the city
I got the new world in my view

Come on, yeah nonny, help me to run this holy righteous place
Can’t you yell then, save your calling, well he’s knockin at your door today

I got the new world in my view
On my journey I pursue
I said I’m running, running for the city
I got the new world in my view

John he bought a record, oh he suffered for Jesus Christ
They placed him on an island called Atmus
He had a great revelation sign

I got the new world in my view
On my journey I pursue
I said I’m running, running for the city
I got the new world in my view 3x

21st Chapter Revelation
John talking about the new world
Said I saw a new heaven and a new earth
For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away
And thou will no more see

John said I saw a new Jerusalem coming down
From God out of heaven, prepared as a bride
A dawn for a husband, amen
You know we are a city, that’s set on the hill
Cannot be here, ? person in a city, amen

So let us humble ourselves dear one
Get ready for the new world
Prepare yourself to live in that holy city
That same city, that same kingdom that Jesus was talking to his disciples about
When he left them and gone back to his father
Don’t forget it, amen
Said let not your heart be troubled
Believe in God, believe in me also!

In my father’s house are many mansions
Everyone not so, I would have told you
I’m going to prepare a place for you
And if I go to prepare a place for you
I will come again and receive you onto myself
That what I am, that you may be also

Now tell me dear one, why was Jesus
He was standing on earth talking to his disciples, amen
Promising them that he’s coming back for them, amen
To live with them here on this earth, amen
He’s gonna live with you in your human bodies
He and his family, amen

So don’t get the bible mixed up
You just keep that same old way that grandma, greatgrandma and grandpa had
They didn’t know any better, God winked at them and said
And they was well blessed for what they knew
And you gonna be cursed for turning the word down, amen
Let the church say amen
Let’s wake up now and get in line

I got the new world in my view
On my journey I pursue
I said I’m running, running for the city
I got the new world in my view

I got the new world in my view
On my journey I pursue
I said I’m running, running for the city
I got the new world in my view

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars

Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” is a very simple song, the lyrics are not that complex, yet the song is really exceptional (well to me anyways). I used to play this song everyday… several times a day. At the time I felt like this song was the soundtrack to my life. Between wanting to lay in the bed all day and forget the world, to being confused about love, “chasing cars” was the song that spoke to me. This song also makes me feel like I can do whatever I want, I always get a sense of freedom when I listen to it. I also love the way the music builds up as the song progresses. Although the lyrics allow the artist to express himself verbally, the piano and guitar provides the song with emotion and passion. Although the beat, instruments, and sound (which I do consider important) are things that usually attract people to songs; I am one who enjoys analyzing the lyrics and relating the words to my own life.

We’ll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don’t need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don’t quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They’re not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that’s bursting into life

Let’s waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that’s bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they’re all I can see

I don’t know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

T.I. - Ready for Whatever & Dead and Gone

TI is one of my favorite rappers for two key reasons: language and substance. He has the ability to say what he wishes in a clear almost paragraph-like format that clearly shows unique ability to command the English language while rapping over a beat. Whether he’s laying an honest track such as “I Still Love You” from his 2003 Trap Muzik album, or a track that’s bursting with exaggerated bravado like “Every Chance I Get” from Paper Trail (2009), he always says exactly what he feels in clear and precise language.

His most recent album,  Paper Trail, has a number of sincere tracks that will probably never reach the radio, but deserve recognition. In “Ready for Whatever” TI explains and accepts responsibility for the illegal actions that lead to a felony conviction on weapons charges. He details the rationale behind the choice, and accepts responsibility for his actions in a way that almost borders on civil disobedience.

The album closes with a track featuring Justin Timberlake entitled “Dead and Gone”.  In these verses, T.I. reflects on some of the battles  he won that weren’t worth fighting.  Here we see a lot of growth and wisdom from his T.I.P. days, and the lyrics hold a lot of good advice for young dudes with hot tempers.

I wanted to post these tracks together because they truly complement one another as they discuss choices and consequences.

‘Dead and Gone’

Oooo, hey I’ve been travelin’ on this road to long
Just trying to find my way back home
The old me is dead and gone… dead and gone…
Ooooooo I ve been travelin’ on this road to long
Just trying to find my way back home
The old me is dead and gone… dead and gone… eeyy

(T.I.)
Ever had one of them days you wish woulda stayd home
Run into a group of ni&&as getting they hate on
you walk by they get wrong you reply then sh*t get blown
Way outta proportion way past discussion
Just u against them, pick one then rush em
Figure you get jump, yeah that next
They don’t wanna stop there now they bussin
Now u gushin’, ambulance rushin’ u to the hospital with a bad concussion
Plus ya hit four times bullet hit ya spine paralyzed waist down now ya wheel chair bound
Nevermind that now u lucky to be alive, Just think it all started you fussin’ with three guys
Now ya pride in the way but ya pride is the way you could *uck around get shot die anyday
Ni&&as die every day all over bull sh*t dope money dice game ordinary hood sh*t
Could this be cuz of hip hop music or did the ones with the good sense not use it
Usually ni&&as don’t know what to do whith their back against the wall so they just start shootin
For red or for blue or for blow I guess, from Bankhead upto ya projects
No more stray, now im straight, now I get it now I take
Time to think, before I make mistakes just for my family’s sake
That part of me left yesterday the heart of me is strong today
No regrets im blessed to say the old me dead and gone away.

(T.I.)
I aint never been scared, I lived through tragic
Situations coulda been dead lookin back at it
Most of that sh*t didn’t even have to happen
But you don’t think about it when you out there trappin’
In apartments hangin smokin’ and rappin’
Ni&&as start sh*t next thing ya know we cappin’
Get locked up then didnt even get mad
Now think about damn what a life I had
Most of that sh*t look back just laugh
Some sh*t still look back get sad
Maybe my home boy still be around
Had I not hit the ni&&a in the mouth that time
I won that fight, I lost that war
I can still see my ni&&a walkin’ out that door
Who’da thought I’d never see Philant no more
Got enough dead homies I don’t want no more
Cost a ni&&a his job, cost me more
I’da took that ass-whoopin now for sure
Now think before I risk my life
Take them chances to get my stripe
A ni&&a put his hands on me alright
Otherwise stand there talk sh*t all night
Cuz I hit you , you sue me,
I shoot you, get locked up, who me?
No more stress, now im straight, now I get it now I take
Time to think before I make mistakes just for my family’s sake
That part of me left yesterday the heart of me is strong today
No regrets im blessed to say the old me dead and gone away.

(J.T.)
I turn my head to the east… I don’t see nobody by my side
I turn my head to the west… still nobody in sight
So I turn my head to the north, swallow that pill that they call pride
The old me is dead and gone, the new me will be alright
I turn my head to the east… I don’t see nobody by my side
I turn my head to the west… still nobody in sight
So I turn my head to the north, swallow that pill that they call pride
The old me is dead and gone, the new me will be alright

Oooo, hey I’ve been travelin’ on this road to long
Just trying to find my way back home
The old me is dead and gone… dead and gone…
Ooooooo I ve been travelin’ on this road to long

Raphael Saadiq - Let’s Take a Walk

Raphael Saadiq is one of few artists who has managed to generate long-term success as a musician as the sounds and possibilities for his music grow and expand over time. Most of us were first introduced to Saadiq as lead singer of “Tony Toni Tone” with hits like “Anniversary”, “If I had no loot”, and “Lay your head on my pillow”. Beyond his work as a part of this group, Saadiq was also a part of the group “Lucy Pearl” with Dawn Robinson (formerly of En Vogue) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (formerly of A Tribe Called Quest).

Since that time, Saadiq has released three solo albums, all of which have distinctly different sounds. He made is solo debut in the summer of 2002 with the album, “Instant Vintage”. This album featured a distinct new sound that the artist describes as ‘gospel-delic’. In fall 2004 Saadiq dropped his second album,”Ray Ray”, which displayed a futuristic sound that was nothing like his debut. With his most recent 2008 release, “The Way I See It”, he turns in a completely different direction to give listeners the sounds of Motown in a way that clearly shows Raphael making the same sounds that made the soul music famous.

If you listen to his latest album, you’ll hear familiar sounds in an original context. For the first 12 tracks, the album plays like it was produced over forty-years ago. Saadiq dates the record in a bonus track by featuring Jay-Z in a remix of an earlier song. I’m feeling this entire album both for the sound, and for the statement it makes about Saadiq as an artist. While I love every track, I’m sharing track 10 entitled, “Let’s Take A Walk”. In this track, Ray Saadiq kind of takes me back to one of the club scenes in the movie “Ray” where Jamie Foxx depicts Ray Charles at his greatest. I hope this track does the same for you. Enjoy.
