One year down….

And several more to go.  Doesn’t seem like a year’s gone by for this site, as much as this year seems to be taking forever to end.  The anniversary theme is “Top 5”, seeing as I only made 5 post this year….ahem (did i really post Nevermore?), I’m talking about my Top 5 first post; the ones that got us each started and the reason we are still here today.  Now, in no particular order:

Hey You Lazy Bastard…. Listen to More Music

This was the battlecry. The “call to arms” if you will, that got a group of 20-somethings, most of which have still never met each other, together to testify about this thing called music.  Mind you, this wasn’t the first music post (That was Cat Stevens later that day), but it was the first on here that got the message out there. Listen. To. Music.

Music that says something to you, even if no one else wants to hear it. Music that makes you want to say something, even if no one wants to hear it (haha).  Music you want others to hear because you shouldn’t be the only one listening to it. Jay, Schwing, i say we call this whole year Phase 1, because you know as well as i do that we haven’t even gotten started yet.  Lead on, Boy Scout.

Chavela Vargas - Paloma Negra (Black Dove

Cali, CaliDre.  Her post on here run almost as deep as she does.  Starting with heavy Spanish influences (a signature) and folky songs, she was the first to post modern pop, and one of the first to podcast on the site….oh yeah, podcast, hmm.  A top contributer, a remarkable friend, and sho’nuff puts short skirts to shame (another signature), Dre-bey is the blood pumping at the heart of Daily Crack.

Mos Def - U R The One

Like music, people can be gems that you never got into.  You can know about them, or really know of them, but you don’t get why everyone is a fan.  Track after track, album after album go by.  Then that one song.  That one hot line. Next day your hunting down the whole catalog, grabbing every mix like you were down from jump.  Vyrtue, I’m a fan.  Might be late getting on the wagon, but i’m a fan haha.  If you keep doing everything from the soul, I’ll be taking it all in from the front row.

ak-momo - greasy spoon

If there is anyone on this site that has made Daily Crack as his Daily Mission to bring you good music, it’s this guy right here.  The postman lets nothing stop him from his…post.  Yeah, that was weak.  You get the point though.  Man’s a beast about keep the page fresh.

Leon Russell - A Song For You

Okay, I snuck my first post in as well.  This is what i thought all my should be and would be on the site. Maybe I’ll come back to that idea, maybe I won’t.  Maybe (and hopefully) I’ll get to something even better than idea.  Daily Crack isn’t going anywhere, because these meaningful post from all of us aren’t either.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Down Boy

This is one of the best songs to take forever getting a record release.  If you’ve ever been to a show, you know it as a staple of their live performances.  I really don’t have much to say today but it gave me a great excuse to post this song.  Enjoy

- happy mushroom

No fame
All there is, all there was
On the second lady
Can’t take a cent
Take a cut
Of that kind of rent
I’ll stand kind of pushed
Kind of bent, on this heavy land
I’ll stand for the sake
Of my friend, I will see him there

Down
Down
Count me down
Down
Down boy, down
Count me down
Down boy
Down boy
Down boy
Down

The same
Not begin
Not give up
In a better way
Again, wash the stains
Off his bed
Not to split ‘em up
I’ll stand
For the sake
Of my friend
I will see him there
Well, I will see him there

Down
Down
Count me down
Down
Down boy
Down
Count me down
Down boy
Down boy
Down boy
Down

Down
Count me down
Down
Down boy

Kanye West and Biggie - Kicks Open Doors - (Terry_Urban_Mix)

Today’s not so much about love as it is about people fucking with yo shit.  If it’s mine, respect it.  If you think it’s mine, think twice that you better respect it.  If you know you got something mine, know i will deal with you if you don’t respect it.  Now exactly what it is all depends on what’s being fucked with.  It could be your car, your girl, your friends and/or family, your pets, your life, your anything that you hold a claim to.  If it’s yours then you deserve to keep it respected.  If one thing contradicts the other, kick them both in the ass.  It’s yours.  You don’t have to pick a side, just keep your shit recognized.  Everyday what’s yours will be tried and tested, as it undoubtedly already has been.  The favorite, however, seems to always be yo patience.  Day in, day out people will push is patience to the limits, seemingly bend over backwards to try every last nerve, and oddly balk when you take issue with with their behavior.  Somedays it maybe is your fault.  Somedays it’s not, and it will not be your fault no matter how many times a person or people want to make it your fault.  If i missed anyway people may fuck with your shit, drop them in the comments.  This is a post to get it all out, no matter how big no matter how small.

Big thanks to Terry Urban and Mick Boogie for providing the theme music for this post.

P.S. We hope y’all appreciate the lyrics in the post, most of the internets gets them wrong…must be all the tubes and pipes….

[Notorious B.I.G.]
You wanna sip Mo’ on my living room flo’

Pick up my phone say, ‘Poppa not home’
Sex all night, mad head in the morn’
Spin my V, smoke all my weed
Tattoo on tit-tie sayin BIG Po-ppa, now check it
You wanna be my main squeeze baby
Don’tcha, you wanna gimme what I need baby
Won’tcha, picture life as my wife just think
Full length mink, fat X and O links
Bracelets to match, conversation was all that
Showed you the safe combinations and all that
Guess you could say youse the one I trusted
Who would ever think that you would spread like mustard?
Shit got hot, you sent Feds to my spot
Took me to court, tried to take all I got
‘Nother intricate plot, the bitch said I raped her
‘Damn, why she wanna stick me for my paper?’
My Mo-sci-no ho, my Ver-sa-ce hottie
Come to find out, you was fuckin everybody
You knew about me, the fake ID
Cases in Virginia, body in D.C.
Woe, oh is me, that’s what I get for trickin
Pay my own bail, commence to ass kickin
Lick in the door, wavin the four-four
All you heard was, ‘Poppa don’t hit me no more’
Disrespect my click, my shit’s imperial
Fuck around and made her milkbox material
You feel me?Suckin dick, runnin your lips
‘Cause of you, I’m on some real fuck a bitch shit….
[Kanye West]
Uh! And I’ll be tryin to come around my girl actin like Mr. Friendly
And steal the spotlight like Mr. Bentley
I spotted her like Spud McKenzie
And for them fake boobies I payed them Benjies
Get your own, I got Paris he got Nicky he tried to get ‘em a clone
He said yeah you know you got extra hoes
And everything you do is extra cold
From the Polo fleece to the Jesus piece
I got family in high places like Jesus’ niece
Can I please, say my peace
If y’all fresh to death, then I’m deceased
And this one here, is a heat rocks
Spit like a beat box, the way the beat rocks
New version of Pete Rock!
But for that Benz I get CL love
So I switch my girls around like 3L-dub [3LW]….

The System - Don’t Disturb This Groove & You Are In My System

If you grew up in the 80s, “obscure” bands with infectious songs you still remember was a way of life.  For every Prince song, there was a Shalamar, or Ready For The World, or Naked Eyes song to hit the radio, when everything on the radio was good. No band stuck with me more than the duo of Mic Murphy and David Frank.

The System had several hits: The Pleasure Seekers, Promises Can Break, and the title track from one of the GREATEST movies of all time Coming To America.  I’ll put that whole damn soundtrack up one day, but that’s going off topic.  Today is about 2 of The System’s best know songs, Don’t Disturb This Groove & You Are In My System.

Don’t Disturb This Groove in 1987 came at the band’s peak, with a well establish sound blending Murphy’s smooth vocals and Frank’s great keyboard, synth, and engineering skills.  The song was classic from day one, and a staple of any good club’s 80’s night.  You Are In My System was the duo’s first single in 1983 and was a marker for the band’s refreshingly different sound.

Fun Fact: Mic Murphy is my boy’s co-worker’s brother, i’ll let y’all Kevin Bacon on that.

Don’t Disturb This Groove

Pay attention are you listening

You’re my favorite girl

Excuse me for the moment
I’m in another world
(On a mountain) by a
fountain
Flowers blooming everywhere
With venus and
cupid, the picture’s very clear
Hang the sign upon the door, say
Don’t disturb this groove
Just a way to say that
I’m so into you and the feelings so real
So don’t disturb this groove

Erotic whispers for the listener
Let the
music fill the air
Excuse me for a moment
I’m at a loss for words
By election sheer perfection
And as if these eyes would care
Your heart is in the right place
So don’t you go and change

Baby over and over the passion starts again
You’re my lollipops and everything
And a little taste of sin
Causing fire and desire
In this mortal soul to live
Till the angels fall from heaven
And the day the earth stands still

Hang a sign upon the door
Say don’t disturb this groove
Just a way to say that
I’m so into you and the feeling’s so real
So don’t disturb this groove
Just a way to tell you that
I’m so into you

Close your eyes and let the music put you in the groove
Lock the door and turn the phone
off, it’s time for me and you
Hang the sign upon the door, say don’t disturb this groove

You Are In My System

Day by day and night by night

I feel you in my mind
It happens all the time
You know my daydreams stop
My heart beats on
I cant take it anymore -
Its you I live for

You are in my system
You are in my system
I just want you to know that
You are in my system
You are in my system, system
Dont you, dont you know that baby?

I will keep on pushing, pushing, pushing
Until I get through
But my main objective baby is to get to you

To turn your mind around -
I know will take time
But you know I cant wait now
You’re on my mind

Oh babe,
You are in my system
You are in my system
I just want you to know that
You are in my system
Got me burning Im on fire
You are in my system
Youre everything I need oh
Dont you know, dont you know that baby?

It’s a romantic vision of me and you
It happens all the time -
My dreams all filled with you
Theres no doubt on my mind
That Ill be true baby

You know Ill take you out and Ill keep love new, oh baby

You are in my system
Got me right down to the wire
You are in my system
Help my equilibrium
You are in my system

Leon Russell - A Song For You

Since this is my first post, please excuse excuse if it goes astray. Second if I’m gonna join in confessing my love of music, I have write about the greatest song of all time.  First time I heard it i was about 8 years old in the back of my parent’s car.  That was the first time i remember listening to the radio, because this was a song like nothing i had ever heard before.  Now I have to clarify this was the Donny Hathaway 1971 version, not the original featured here.  But the words hit me about as deep a song can hit a person, at any age.  This simplicity of the piano, the sincerity in his voice, the honesty of the song as whole. That was the first time I understood the term “tears of joy”.  On the original, however, Russell “distinctive voice” on the track might make you question where the song came from.  My favorite quote i heard writing this:

this dude sounds drunk as hell

comment on that shit
lol
wrote this shit, got drunk as shit, and sang some real shit

Leon Russell has probably written and/or sung one of your favorite song, however you probably know it covered by an other prominent artist.  He’s career has spanned over 40 years but it’s the fascination by other artist has kept him crossing over to different generations.  ”Superstar” (made famous by The Carpenters and Luthor Vandross) and “This Masquerade” (another recorded by The Carpenters and Grammy “Record of the Year” in 1977 for George Benson) are just 2 of the songs he’s given this world and they’ve kept coming back over and over.  The man is prolific in the art of songwriting, a diverse as great session musician, and i’ve rambled on enough.  Just listen to the melody and read the lyrics.

- happy mushroom

I’ve been so many places in my life and time
I’ve sung a lot of songs I’ve made some bad rhyme
I’ve acted out my love in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we’re alone now and I’m singing this song for you

I know your image of me is what I hope to be
I’ve treated you unkindly but darlin’ can’t you see
There’s no one more important to me
Darlin’ can’t you please see through me
Cause we’re alone now and I’m singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth witholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I’m so much better and if my words don’t come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there’s no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth witholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I’m so much better and if my words don’t come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there’s no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you
We were alone and I was singing this song for you
