Kool & the Gang - Summer Madness

I was in the car with some friends on a beautiful night listening to the old school station.  All of a sudden this song came on.  A song we all knew well, heard it all the time, even remembered what hip hop artist sampled it.  However, we could not remember who did this song.  First guesses were Herbie Hancock & Roy Ayers.  So i pulled out the shazam app on my iphone and up came Kool & the Gang Summer - Madness.  I was like I guess this is right because in Will Smith’s “Summertime” he says the name of the song, but we all weren’t sold that it was actually them.  Most of us are used to Kool & the Gang’s pop-infused funk like Jungle Boogie, Ladie’s Night, & Celebration, not a song so deep and funky as this.  I’ve now realized that I’ve been sleeping on Kool & the Gang.  I’m going to give the album Light of the World, which features Summer Madness a good listen.

So enjoy the summer days that are coming.  I’m preparing for the best one yet

The Revels - Comanche

I have for a long time been a fan not only of Quentin Tarentino, but of his taste in music. I mean…this dude knows his music. The soundtracks to his films are always superb - filled with obscure songs that tie seamlessly into the plot. This dude found some bad ass spanish jams for Kill Bill 2, reminded everyone Nancy Sinatra had a great rendition of Bang Bang (it was originally by Cher I think), and don’t even get me started on the fabulousness that was the music of Grindhouse.

He used this track in Pulp Fiction, and might I say he used it perfectly. Man I would LOVE to peruse his music collection. If any of ya’ll have the hook up - let me know! Enjoy!

I hope you all are stuffing your faces and basking in some nice weather.

John Williams, Yo-Yo Ma & Itzhak Perlman - The Chairman’s Waltz
(from Memoirs of a Geisha Soundtrack)

geisha

John Williams was absolutely genious in composing the soundtrack for this movie. Each song does exactly what its supposed to do - not overwhelm the scene but trigger your memory whenever you hear it thereafter.

The other reason this soundtrack is so genious is that Williams didn’t limit the genious talent to himself on this project. He brought in arguably the best cellist in the world to work with him (Yo-Yo Ma) and a violenist on par (Itzhak Perlman). I don’t know much about Perlman because I’m more of a cello girl myself, but from what I do know of Yo-Yo Ma…let me just say Williams wanted the best for the best.

I think a good percentage of people that REALLY appreciate music are those who have no musical inclination themselves. I SOOOO wish I could play an instrument. Alas…I grew up PO’ (not poor) and couldn’t afford lessons or rentals. And since VH1’s Save the Music hadn’t made their way to South Central yet, I was S.O.L. But…at some point I do plan on learning the cello. I just love the way it cries and sings. Such a beautiful instrument…beautiful track….beautifully performed. Enjoy!

Vince Guaraldi Trio - Heartburn Waltz

Although this is really a Thanksgiving tune (from the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving movie), I completely associate it with Christmas and winter weather.  I’m a sucker for a songs with jazzy keyboard (Booker T and the MGs, 60s Brazilian bossa nova/ jazz, late beatles, most late 60s soul, The Roots, and of course, Guaraldi), and the tinkling notes make me picture— while looking down on a giant outdoor ice skating rink like Central Park—  people whirling on ice…  retro knit scarves and hats and whirling and stumbling and laughing and shivering in the 1960s.  I think the simple and stripped down feel, makes it seem wintery to me.  Its a great holiday ambiance song without an heavyhanded holiday message.

If you like HEARTBURN WALTZ, you’ll also love…
