The Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes

this song is your god for the day. if you refuse to like it will smite you. michael mcdonald is a bearded wonder who also wrote one of the smoothest songs in history, ‘i keep forgettin’
‘what a fool believes’ is great because it’s a hell of a story. the song is about a who is nostalgic about a past relationship. however, he is simply a fool to think that he can have the relationship back. the concept is simple but the writing is superb. i spoke about this before, but i also love songs where the mood is a little opposite then what it is actually about. it’s fun listening to a song that you love and then getting the epiphany/oh shit when you realize what the song is actually about because your so caught up in the music.
this song is also featured on our first podcast, enjoy
He came from somewhere back in her long ago,
the sentimental fool don’t see,
tryin’ hard to re-create what had yet to be created
once in her life.
She musters a smile for his nostalgic tale,
never coming near what he wanted to say,
only to realize it never really was.
She had a place in his life.
He never made her think twice.
As he rises to her apology,
anybody else would surely know
he’s watching her go.
But what a fool believes he sees,
no wise man has the power to reason away.
What seems to be is always better than nothing.
And nothing at all…
keeps sending him somewhere back in her long ago,
where he can still believe there’s a place in her life.
Someday, somehow, she will return.
She had a place in his life.
He never made her think twice.
As he rises to her apology,
anybody else would surely know
he’s watching her go.
But what a fool believes he sees,
no wise man has the power to reason away.
What seems to be is always better than nothing.
Love can come and love may go,
but why can’t love return once more?
Who’s got the power?
But what a fool believes he sees,
no wise man has the power to reason away.
What seems to be is always better than nothing.
I believe she’s never going away.
But what a fool believes he sees,
no wise man has the power to reason away.
What seems to be is always better than nothing.
