So I noticed I haven’t posted on Daily Crack in a while…I believe a month actually. So the best way to jump back into it is to review a music video and get with the times. You may remember my post on Stones Throw’s goofy but lovable producer James Pants a while back. His 2008 debut album, Welcome, has been on constant rotation.

First look at this video makes you think it might be a deleted scene from Tim & Eric’s Awesome show but please believe it is a legit music video. Combined with the dopeness of this track, it provides everything needed for a “trendy” video:

L.T.D.-Love Ballad

Let me just start off by saying, I loved growing up in a Soul music household. I remember those Saturday mornings doing my chores with the local R&B/Soul station on from morning to evening and not ever getting the slightest urge to change the station. Soul music is a huge part of my culture and is a main reason for my love of Hip Hop as well. One of my favorite soul groups will always be L.T.D. They are a 1970s R&B/Soul band formed by Jimmie Davis and Abraham Miller. Later on they recruited more members, the most known probably being Jefferey Osbourne, who was the vocalist and also a drummer.

“Love Ballad” is one of their more commercial hits (since it broke into the Billboard Pop charts) but it’s because of how influential this track is in hip hop sampling is the reason why I posted it. Many artists have paid homage to the band and “Love Ballad” but what made me appreciate the value and greatness of this song was how late producer, J Dilla, flipped the sample for De La Soul’s “Much More.” It’s actually awe inspiring to just imagine how much Dilla him self must have loved this song to utilitize it flawlessly. I guess what I’m trying to say is that what makes this song so special is that not only did it entertain but it inspired future artists and continues to prove that it is a timeless song.

Little Dragon-Constant Surprises


I discovered Little Dragon from a reference and ever since hearing their self-titled album, I’ve fallen in love. They are a band from Sweden fronted by leading lady Yukimi Nagano and have received praise for their chill trip hop sound. While it isn’t my favorite track from the album, I think the production is flawless. It’s remeniscient of old school hip hop and UK garage. Yukimi’s voice is also astounding which compliments her fresh style. Not much to say this time and I don’t think it’s necessary with this song. It’s amazing. I love it and I’m sure you’ll love it too. You can check out the video here.

Janelle Monáe-Sincerely, Jane

When some people think about soul artists, they usually picture Bohemian sisters and chilled out brothers, sly production and songs of love and life. So when artist such as Janelle Monáe comes along, the genre is shaken up. So shaken up, they put her into her own sub-genre of alternative soul, to which I say, hell no. She’s a soul artist with an innovative sound. Ever since the up coming artist signed to Purple Ribbon, she’s released her EP, Metropolis:The Chase Suite, she has now moved to Bad Boy Records (Please don’t ruin her Diddy) and rocked shows with her off the wall energy and show antics. Any chick that jumps in a pool and climbs up a tree for a live performance gets automatic respect from me.

What also sets her apart is that her music is all a concept. Her debut EP is the story about a cyborg named Cindy Mayweather who falls in love with a human and must now be destroyed. While the rest of the EP is upbeat and odd, this track is the darkest and most socially poignant track. Set in the fictional city of Metropolis, which is now a place of anarchy, Janelle paints a story of hopelessness for Metropolis. While the city is fictional, she is relating the same events of Metropolis to what is going on in the country today. With stamping horns and hard percussion,while delivering uncut lyrics with a raw delivery.

Janelle is not an “alternative” soul artist. She’s a soul artist with the potential to flip it upside down.

Flying Lotus-RobertaFlack (feat. Dolly)



This isn’t my first time mentioning LA based producer Flying Lotus. If you can recall, I mentioned his work with Jose James on a 12” they did together. FlyLo (what he is called by his fans) is the great-newphew and cousin of Alice and Ravi Coltrane, which has a heavy influence on his production. It’s a task in itself trying to explain his genre and type of production. He is a hip hop producer but he is known to experiment with electronica, shoegaze, jazz (of course) and anything he can get his hands on.

In June 2008, FlyLo released his second LP, Los Angeles, a beautifully engineered album filled with spacey beats and soulful features. This track, “RobertaFlack”, is a neo-soul melody with hypnotic strings, soul claps and hip hop drums. Provided with vocals by Dolly, she smoothly rides on the bass line of this track. FlyLo just has a talent that can’t be denied. His production not only entertains the listener but it provokes thought and actually forces the listener to pay close attention to figure out every little detail. This album was received with high praise from music critics and made it clear that FlyLo is the most talented producer in upcoming hip hop.

Gym Class Heroes-On My Own Time (Write On!)

I know what you’re thinking. Gym Class Heroes, really? But there was a time before The Quilt, before Travis signing to Nappy Boy, a time before “Cupid’s Chokehold” wasn’t even on As Cruel As School Children (it was re-released on this album due to its huge success) that Gym Class Heroes were dope. I’ve seen them live before the fame, glitz and glory. And while I am happy that they are now the heartthrobs for preteens and their mothers alike, I will always prefer old GCH to new GCH (yes, elitist.)

“On My Own Time (Write On!)” was my favorite track from their third album. A friend of mine had put me on to them back in 2006 and this was the first track I fell in love with. Despite the 2 minute shout outs at the end of the song, it’s still a feel good track. Not to mention Sashi’s guitar solo is nice (and the guy bought me dinner back in Vegas so he’s also just one cool ass individual.) So I know you probably can’t stand Gym Class Heroes because of that atrocity called “Cookie Jar” but every now and then, I break out this track because it is perfection for the Spring.

Kudu - Love Me In Your Language

Kudu is an acid jazz/electronic trio consisting of Sylvia Gordon, Deantoni Parks and Nick Kasper. You might recognize Sylvia from her feature on Spank Rock’s “B.O.O.T.A.Y.” and if you didn’t recognize her, shame on you. Ms. Sylvia is one incredible and dirty female vocalist. One of the main reasons why I even love Kudu so much is due to her personality which oozes all over their album, Death of the Party. The fact that she has impressive band mates is an added bonus.

The album itself is all over the place but Kudu effectively harnesses multiple styles to suit their sound. Love Me In Your Language is one of those examples. Over a 80s pop synth and heavy drums, Sylvia explains her dilemma of finding men all over the world but not being able to understand their language. Her solution? She doesn’t need to know the language..she just needs him to “say it like a man.” You can also view the video here.

José James-Park Bench People (Originally Performed by Freestyle Fellowship)


Last year I discovered Jose James due to his work with LA producer, Flying Lotus when the two had teamed up to release a 12”. On one side was a track titled “Visions of Violet” which is also an amazing song but what caught my attention was the other single, “Park Bench People.” I recognized the title because it was first performed by a lesser known hip hop group, Freestyle Fellowship, a very slept on group during the West Coast alternative hip hop movement of the 90s. So before even hearing his voice or if he even did the cover justice, I was intrigued by James simply because he even knew who Freestyle Fellowship was and that he would decide to cover one of the tracks from their classic album, Innercity Griots.

Well, not only did James do the cover justice, he gave it a certain twist that most other artists miss when they do covers. James has one of the most powerful voices out of recent artists of the Soul/Jazz genre and he shows it beautifully in the cover. Not to mention that he even did a video for it as well which was shot at a homeless shelter in New York (The song is about the strife of the homeless) and it also included on his album, The Dreamer. It is a must have for fans of Soul, Jazz or just great music.

The Roots - Rising Down (feat. Mos Def, Dice Raw & Styles P)

I’ve been a fan of the Legendary Roots Crew since as long as I can even remember. What makes them so incredible is their consistency and innovation. For many other artists, the two qualities usually can’t go hand in hand. You either get the same good formula used repeatedly or you get a new sound but the artist fails to ever recreate the sound or anything better than it. The Roots have proven over time, that they are not the case.

With Rising Down, The Roots turned to a darker and more social/political sound with their 10th studio album. “Rising Down” most effectively showcases the sound. Set with heavy claps, grungy synths and hard drums courtesy of ?uestLove, Black Thought with the assistance of emcees Mos Def, Styles P and Dice Raw rap about their pessimistic views on the present society. Each emcee fires lines off criticizing every present problem from outsourcing to global warming. However, where some emcees would fall short for coming off as too “preachy”, they are able to get their point across and still create one dope song.
