Jupiter Rising - Home

jupiter rising

I’ve been listening this song on heavy rotation for a minute now. Not to insert the obvious but I’m terribly homesick. It’s been five years but do plan on returning this summer. This song is precisely how I feel about the situation, it’s also insanely beautiful. Enjoy!

Oh Lord I’m coming home.
It’s been so long I’ve gone away.
Sometimes it’s just good to roam.
Makes you wanna find yo way home.

It ain’t the same no more, people done changed on me.
Can’t complain no more, cause I changed too.
I felt strange before, like I could not be me.
I just got to go, got to go home.

This ain’t my place no more, the plan done changed on me.
Can’t complain no more, cause I changed too.
I felt insane before, like I could not be free.
Took another road, to find my way home.

We’ve been so many places, played so many stages.
But we’re glad we’re here, cause here is home.
We’ve been all the rage in Indonesia and Asia.
But we’re glad we’re here, cause here is home.

K’naan - In the Beginning

The end of 2009 can’t come fast enough. Like many, this hasn’t been the best of my 22 years. There were three people got me through; Nas, Talib Kweli and K’naan. Since Your Daily Crack has had posts on the first two, I thought I’d give you something from the latter. This particular song is the first I heard from K’naan, “In the Beginning” (appropriately titled I know).

I came across K’naan while finishing my minor in Black World Studies. I was researching the East African country Somalia, which is where he hails from. For those of you that don’t know, Somalia has been torn by a civil war for the last two decades. Here in the States the general knowledge of Somalia is that of poverty, pirates and bloodshed but then I discovered the poetry. Somalia is a Nation of Poets and K’naan is exactly that. Luckily for us he express that poetry in English. For me, he is the most refreshing voice in hip-hop and since his infamous song “Waving Flag” became the World Cup Anthem; I can only hope that everyone will awaken to his voice.
