Soundgarden- Black Hole Sun

i used to love this video when i was a kid. when it came out, i didn’t listen to many genres outside hip hop and r&b. the television in the home where i spent much of my time growing up (with thousands of cousins), when it was on a music station, typically wasn’t on a channel where i could watch something like this or, if it were, the channel was changed immediately. so imagine my surprise when one day this song came on and someone forgot or was too lazy to change the channel. my cousins and i were transfixed. we would watch it whenever it came on after that. *sigh* memories.

8ball & MJG- Space-Age Pimpin’

‘i’d be obliged if you step outside…’

a friend of mine and i ran across this song last night in a random youtube video. we excited searched for and listed to (and sang along with) the full song. it was fun to listen to the song because, for me at least, it is so closely connected to my childhood. i think i said this in a previous ball&g post, but these i listened to these guys as much as anyone else when i was younger. and this song was a favorite of mine. when i posted ‘coming out hard,’ i told myself i wouldn’t post this, but our overly-dramatic performance was so much fun, i had to put this up. you’d have thought we were performing at esso or kaya or 112.* goin’ in!

*i don’t remember if you could perform at any of those places. they were beguiling mysteries to me as a kid, and anathemas once i was old enough to go.

Billy Joel - The Longest Time

billy joel

Oh how I love this song, let me count the ways:
                 1. It’s a doo wop jam that was written in the 80s

                 2. Every voice in the “quartet” sounds like Billy Joel’s. Wait - that’s cuz they ARE Billy Joel’s! You gotta love a guy that records himself and overlaps 14 different vocal parts.

                 3. The video is so damn funny.

                 4. Its doo wop!

If you’ve never had a chance to see the hilarity that is the music video, catch it here.

Norman Connors- You are My Starship

i find myself singing this song a lot. i really like it. it has a little stank on it. a little “ooooo weee.” ain’t nothing like some old school lovin’. i imagine this song can draw out the cassanova in all of us. dim the lights a bit, throw this on, and let the magic happen. enjoy.

The Deele- Two Occasions

for a long time, this was one of my favorite songs. babyface and the rest of the crew had a certified hit on their hands with this one. it stands up for me. i mean, it has a timelessness about it. i hope you all enjoy it.

MJ

Michael Jackson - I Wanna Be Where You Are

I could be in a marketplace in Timbuktoo with a million foreign sounds invading my ears and an MJ song - any MJ song - could come on and be instantly recognizable. Michael had that rare gift of a having a voice so distinct that even with literally hundreds of songs recorded anyone can pick him out of a line up.

My love for lil’ Mike has never waned and this has got to be one of my favorite songs. I mean…I say that all the tiem but it’s always true.  This song doesn’t waste anytime warming up. Mike dives right in and everytime I’m diving in with him. So let me tell you where it’s at…right here! Sit back and enjoy. I know I am.

Harry Belafonte & Nat King Cole- Mama Look A Boo Boo

it was nice to see two artists whom i’ve heard a lot about perform together. i haven’t really taken the time to explore either artist’s discography or history (shame on me), so i thought it a bit strange that they might perform together. and i was doubly curious what song they would perform. turns out it’s a fun song about a man whose children find him ugly. both men seem to have a genuinely good time being on stage together. it’s nice to see. enjoy.

Carlos Varela - Una Palabra

Carlos Varela

For anyone that was curious about that beautifully haunting song at the end of “Man on Fire,” here it is in all of its glory. I love this song and everytime I listen to it I wander around the house for hours and hours singing it to myself. And inevitably my beau gets tired of it and asks if I know any other words besides “una palabra, no dice nada…y el mismo tiempo lo escondo todo.”

*Sigh*

I do but its just such a pretty sentiment. “A word doesn’t say anything and at the same time hides everything.” Very loose translation but you get the gist. Gorgeous gorgeous song. Enjoy!
