Elzhi- Deep

i posted a slum village song or two a while back, so elzhi has been featured, but they guy is so good! he deserves a little solo shine. he’s one of those guys who makes you ask why he isn’t famous. or perhaps, more honestly, you just wish he were more famous. the guy is a talented writer and he has a versatile and listenable (don’t look that word up, please) flow. i first heard him on ‘detroit deli’ and he has continued to impress me since. if you haven’t heard of him, be sure to check him out. if you have, then i don’t need to say anything, do i? enjoy.

Digable Planets- Nickel Bag of Funk

if you love enunciation, then you’ll love this song. if you like a little jazz in your hip-hop, this should be right up your alley. if you think calling yourself doodlebug is the proper way to kick off a career in music, this song is for you. if none of those fit, hey, just check it out. you might like it anyway. besides, you know you liked ‘rebirth of slick’ when it was out. don’t play. enjoy.

[Ladybug]
The Bloom, the Swoon, the Sugars on your block
The Planets land in flesh in the corners of New York
The ghetto, the meadow, the Mr. Butter flew
The Honeybugs dug and licked the honey dew
The sun, the kiss, the funk for a bliss
The lips with the soul and some jazz for ya hips
The puff, the buzz, the lids be heavy slick
The Mecca get a rush when the beats be very thick
The hands, the feet, the brown baby treat
The femmes fumble loose and drink the doodlejuice
The steps, the flams, the Planets goddamn
The peoples get a grip with a tape from a jam

{all together}
A nickel bag of funk (x8)

[Butterfly]
The big, the fat, the cool cool cats
The psychedelic soul puts the Planets on the map
The chic, the love, the far out name
The lack of the funk’s the main why we came
The boogie gets done, the colors won’t run
The funk hits the square, the kids gotta come
The pizza with the pop, the west 4th stop
The crew after crew that do the grasshop
The true cool is black, the new school is fat
The beats by the ounce, the funk by the pack
The hanging off the butts with the fat sole kicks

{all together}
A nickel bag of funk (x8)

[Doodlebug]
The wide, the hip, dig it it’s the trip
The loops, the scene and the funkifying it
The sounds, the pounds, the stacks, the flair
The baggy baggy jeans, the notty notty hair
The twinkle in the eye, the kids that livin’ fly
The crew from the sky, the stuff that gets you high
The action, the work from the rhyme
We goes the whole nine
The papers won’t rot, the vapors get got
The streets give the buzz the funk up your block
The opium groove, the smacked out soul
The kickin’ it live the fat gotta roll

{all together}
A nickel bag of funk (x8)

A nickel bag, a nickel bag Ladybug’ll hit ya with a nickel bag
A nickel bag, a nickel bag Butterfly’ll hit ya with a nickel bag
A nickel bag, a nickel bag Doodlebug’ll hit ya with his nickel bag
A nickel bag, a nickel bag DPs always hit you with they nickel bag

Witchdoctor feat. Cool Breeze- Georgia Plains (Holy Grounds)

this song was on the album ‘a s.w.a.t. healin’ ritual’ which came out in 1998. witchdoctor was and is a member of the dungeon family. he’s been featured on tracks with outkast, goodie mob, and others. he has a hilarious verse on the song ‘mamacita.’ in it he says:

in the microwave, i’ve got your favorite stouffer’s
lasagna
that’s how much i want ya

he also has had a few hits himself, the biggest of which was probably the song holiday (also on ‘s.w.a.t.’). they may have been more regional than national, but, suffice to say, he was a known figure in atlanta. this here is my favorite song on the album. it features another dungeon family hero, cool breeze. it’s a great combination. enjoy.

My choice was the streets, kinda came natural to me
So i’m fishin’, trouble comes
I’m dishin’ out some shots from the doctor’s gun
Got me trapped in this world under this moon and sun
Shit aint fun or funny, fuck a smile, i’ts ‘bout collectin’ money
I’m tryin’ to take better care of my body this quarter
Docter say drink more water, but Bacardi got you bent in this bitch
Life sometimes is like steppin’ in some fuckin’ horse shit
Seven years of tears in this game
Made me one of the smallest predators on this Georgia plain
In the fields, in the hills, never picked no cotton
It’s the nigga wit that golden trigga
I’m seein’ more planes in the sky at night
Look like UFO’s, think they transportin’ dem kilo’s
The drug cartel has swelled out of proportion
On the corner everyday we indorsin’
The street life is my life, scratchin’ to stay on top
I’m rappin’ it for my block, Atlanta

You betta have some game in yo’ veins
You betta learn this southern slang

Cool Breeze:
I’m hearin’ rumors about what yo’ clique gone do
I stepped up like it was cool and confronted his crew
I said “Now which one of y’al suppose to take me to school?”
If you see a lame nigga, nigga take his shoes
I’m from Eats Point, Atlanta, we dont fight by rules
You dont know Cool Breeze or lil Freddy Calhoun
In this place, the dirty south, we’ll hit ya for a lick
Sell you dreams, nice things, and it be a box of bricks
Most haters, imitators, think they know Cool Breeze
Aint jack but a rat on my East Point cheese
I know it iritates yo’ ears, how I chop these trees
You nothin’ but a lame ‘round these EPV’s
All my enemies who don’t know what they jumped in
If the doctor came through once, he’ll come through again
And when look and he ask me where everybody is
They didnt believe in your return so they ran for the hills
And I still got that same pain in my chest
My perscription stress, no cess, and wear a Teflon vest
And these niggas still try and test
Dont even know me or these Georgia plains
Boy these grounds are HOLYYYY!!!!!

A Tribe Called Quest- Vibes and Stuff

it’s atcq. what more can you say? ha. i can’t let myself get away with that. i know these guys by reputation more than anything else. i’ve never listened to an entire tribe album, nor have i heard more than ten of their songs. i like this one, though. i heard it while riding with a friend of mine. i remember thinking, ‘if this is what i’ve been missing, i need to get on my job.’ i still haven’t gotten on my job, but this song stuck with me. so, here it is. that’s all i’ve got for this one. enjoy.

Three Six Mafia- South Memphis, Bitch (chopped & screwed)

ok. i have wanted to post this for a long time. i haven’t because sometimes my feelings are hurt when you all don’t like my posts. most of the time, i don’t care. i post the music because i like it. there are, however, certain songs that are dear to me. when i post those songs, i wait with baited breath to see if anyone will rate it. i remember how long it took me to post ‘sawdust & diamonds.’ that’s still one of my favorite songs, but i know many people can’t bear joanna’s voice. fortunately, several people liked it. this one, is equally challenging, but for different reasons. i recognize that. i have several reasons for liking the song, though. i listened a lot of three six coming up, and i listened to chopped and screwed stuff. i still check it out at times. it’s in my blood. that’s why i’m nervous. i like the song, and it’s, in a sense, roots music. be gentle.

South Memphis, bitch (x32)

Now it is time to get rough wid the drama
Bit-ches you can not escape from the hun-ter
Evil, Scarecrow, dead folks, fell slow
Deep in my soul, blood on my clothes
Crim-inal hands and I must squeeze a weapon
Listen to sounds of the lead when we step-pin’
Infamous comes from the south territory
Listen to some of my deep money poetry
Circles of Triple 6 men smokin’ ganja
Ri-tuals wid dead bodies on the furniture
So many soldiers are comin’ to destroy ya
Six million sinister, satanic warriors
Is ill, will drill, will kill nina milli
Flame afilli I will fill thee enemy
Wid the five twenty slugs to the mug
One mo’ trick in the mud
Quick, I want all my niggas in the south to say this shit

South Memphis, Bitch (x24)

The loud thump, of the pump
Lock our trunks, in the fuckin’ punks
Hyde Parkway, in this vicious sauce smoke a thousand blunts
My niggas over in Havana Hill, packin’ plenty steel
All my niggas over in Claybert Homes, gangstas on the real
The Gardens, Herden Parkway, yeh and Fowler Homes
Texas Court, Gs cause in Mclemore they crackin’ domes
Foot Homes, Lemont terrorist, in Riverside
South Memphis niggas ready for a fuckin’ homicide
The Southgate, BellSouth Sea, Trick and Lauderdale
Snatchin’ off the side of niggas heads wid the shotgun shells
Low View Heights, Kansas, Wellington, Cambridge
Tryna cross South Memphis man I swear you wish you never did
South Memphis motherfuckin’ South, yeh that’s what I said
The place where plenty playas, plenty murderers will bone that brig
When the smoke clears from the fire you will witness
All my niggas gettin’ wild straight from fuckin’

South Memphis, bitch
South Memphis, bitch
[repeats ‘til end]

Rich Kidz - Patna Dem (Mad Decent Patna’s remix by DJA)

living in atlanta provides you with a continuous onslaught of hood rap.  some makes it out of the city, some gets stuck as atl one hit classics.  patna dem came out earlier this year and took over.  i’ve been here for almost 10 years and i still need translation for some of the stuff these kids say.

flashback: i remember when souljah boi first came out.  i was watching tv one’s roots marathon.  i got up to go get some food and uncharacteristically decided to turn on the radio.  when i heard the lyrics “soljah boi up in des do wa me crank dat wa me do, why me yooooouu… why me yoooooou…” i became upset that kizzy, kunta, and dem were speaking better english then atlanta teens.

anyway back to patna dem, i still don’t quite understand the song, they shout out a lot of different neighborhoods then start shouting out other stuff such as “true religion” so who knows.  this remix though makes the song for me, hood and electronic.  also ironically is done by artists in the two places i call home, atl and philly.  if you enjoy this go get the FREE ATL Remix album from Adult Swim
