Nina Simone- I Put a Spell on You

It’s undeniable that Nina Simone breathed new life into her now more famous version of this classic. Her voice is soultry, haunting, a little bit naughty, and you can’t help but to be hypnotized.

Jens Lekman - Your Arms Around Me

Thank you thank you thank you Drew Barrymore for using this song so aptly in the pool scene of Whip It. It was such a perfect song to use at that moment and I have absolutely fallen in love with it and with Lekman.

Jens (pronounced Yens) is of course Swedish. Apparently the staff here at DC has a fetish for the Swedes - what can we say. I’m so addicted to the quality of his instrument right about now that I might have to go out and buy all of his cds. Next time I get paid that is! Damn my poor cash flow.

But yes - I love everything about this song. Its romantic and deep and dark and so insanely beautiful that it hurts. If my life had a soundtrack this song would be the theme. At least I’d hope that events played out so that this song could be the theme : )

Anywhoo - I guess I’ll just have to settle on listening to this track on repeat for the next 2 weeks. I’m sure you’ll be forced to do the same (unless you find yourself in a higher tax bracket then myself!)!!! ENJOY!!!

MJ

Michael Jackson - I Wanna Be Where You Are

I could be in a marketplace in Timbuktoo with a million foreign sounds invading my ears and an MJ song - any MJ song - could come on and be instantly recognizable. Michael had that rare gift of a having a voice so distinct that even with literally hundreds of songs recorded anyone can pick him out of a line up.

My love for lil’ Mike has never waned and this has got to be one of my favorite songs. I mean…I say that all the tiem but it’s always true.  This song doesn’t waste anytime warming up. Mike dives right in and everytime I’m diving in with him. So let me tell you where it’s at…right here! Sit back and enjoy. I know I am.

David Cook - Permanent

David Cook has been one of the few American Idols who I have liked from the beginning of the season to the end. From his audition to the finale I have always felt Mr. Cook. I love his cool rocker vibe and how he tears up songs from other genres while adding his twist to it. Don’t even get me started on his version of Lionel Richie’s Hello (one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists done so damn well).

Needless to say, besides Kelly Clarkson, David Cook is the only AI contestant who has a CD I have purchased. I should prolly go buy 1 or 2 others but I’m just lazy. So for now enjoy my favorite song from his album.

Peggy Lee - Fever

Peggy Lee

I don’t remember what I was doing or watching, but Beyonce’s remake of this song came on and I was utterly flabbergasted. She just doesn’t do this song any justice.

Peggy Lee was one classy dame and she made this song sizzle. There is this amazing heat - cool and smoldering that she brings to this song. Even that little quality where she rushes through saying “fe-vah” really quickly…like she was a little rushed for breath and had to get out quickly - LOVE IT!

So here’s to the classics. Enjoy!

U2 - I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

Every so often i think it’s good to reflect on what life and all the things that have gone on in the past week, month, or year.  This song as always been a reminder to always keep striving ahead, pushing onward and moving forward. Because when you stop, you just might settle for anything.
