CéU - Rainha

I first came across Brazilian singer/songwriter CéU when I bought a Microsoft Zune (CéU means “sky” in Portuguese). The Zune came preloaded with content including videos, pictures, and songs. There was a song by CéU, which is the song I have chosen to share, and a video for another song of hers. The video can be found here. It’s a bit unclear, but the song is amazing and I highly recommend listening to it.

My father referred to her sound as “Sade,” but with a Latin twist, which is a surprisingly pretty accurate description. Her self-titled debut album is a wonderful mix of flamenco, reggae, jazz, samba, and soul. Although I don’t understand a word she is saying, there is something about her voice and the way she uses it along with the music that speaks to me in a way I understand. Sometimes it makes me want to dance, sometimes smile, and other times sympathize with her. Music really is a universal language, even though there may a language barrier, a person can still enjoy it.

Marc Anthony - Y Hubo Alguien (And There Was Someone)

Marc Anthony

Oh there is something about a Latin man in a blouse that always gets me…

I love salsa and there is the possibility that no one does it better then Marc Anthony. Now…if you want to get into semantics then let me clarify. Selena - she sang Tejano. Julio Iglesias - don’t know what I’d classify him under but not salsa. Celia Cruz - hmmmm…a bit before my time. Definitely rocked it but Marc still wins the soft spot. What can I say - I grew up on him and love him still. And hey, I must not be alone because according to Guinness, he is the best selling salsa artist of all time. He was also the first solo salsa performer to sell out Madison Square Garden. Now thats saying something.

Now for those of you that aren’t very familiar with salsa, its all about love. Love lost, love unrequited, love impending and love unconditional. Marc has a beautiful voice that fills with emotion, so much so that sometimes it sounds like he’s crying. When he decides to take you some place emotionally, boy does he deliver.

This song is one that I’m sure a few of us can relate to. Someone walks out on you, breaks your heart, and got the damn nerve to come back around later saying they miss you. If that ain’t bout some BS! Well thats whats going on in this song. Marc is reminding that ho that she decided to leave and that she made room for someone much better to come along. How bout them apples!

So whether someone just left you, someone is in the process of picking up the pieces or if the asshole called you yesterday to “see how ya doing,” today’s post is for you. Cuz remember, they’re just making room in your life for the right person to come along.

Marc Anthony - Y Hubo Alguien (And There Was Someone)

y hubo alguien
alguien que llen mis dias y llen mis noches

y hubo alguien
se te olvido decirme adios
abras mi puerta para otro amor

Ella me da tanto tu me dejaste ir
sincero, perfecto y bonito, tu ves

Suddenly it strikes you to find me again
to talk about us and go out to eat

It appears as if you missed me a whole lot
and you were not happy with your other half

Suddenly it strikes you to start feeling again
about he who truly knows how to make you happy

But you seem to forget that when you marched out of here
I was left just like you - free to choose

And there was someone who took care of giving me everything each afternoon
and who would die to fill me with details and loving words
And there was someone who while you lived your life so far apart
would take care of mine with anger and she succeeded in winning me over

And with that someone one night of endless madness
I surrendered my love, my body, my soul, my mind and my being
like you no longer know how to

Suddenly it strikes you to break down and cry
to say that you never could forget about me
but you seem to overlook that when you marched out of here
I was left just like you - free to choose

You forgot to say goodbye to me
You forgot to say goodbye to me
and there was someone someone who filled my days
and filled my nights with a new illusion
You forgot to say goodbye to me
You forgot!
You forgot to say goodbye to me
and there was someone
You forgot to say goodbye
you opened my door for another love

She gives me so much You let me go
She gives me so much love And you didnt think of me
And so much warmth and now you cant live alone, without me
now theres someone who gives me so much love and affection
sincere, perfect and lovely, you see

How I cried I tell you
how I cried, how I cried
Inconsolable!
I tell you
how I cried, how I cried
Sad and desperate!
You didnt think of me, too bad
and you marched on out, girl
Cry over and over, cry over and over cry!
But I dont care about you anymore

Ohhhhh, ohhhhh, ohhhhh, ohhhhh

And now you cant live alone, without me (4x)

How I cried…How I cried…I cried so much…How I cried

Ozomatli - Ya Viene El Sol

Ozomatli

WOO HOO BITCHES.

Sorry…just quite ecstatic to be out of the vice grip that was the Killer Kung Fu Wolf Flu. In celebration of my new non-diseased state, I decided to post a song that makes me wanna jump outta my seat and shake my ass all night long.

Ozomatli is a little known (to the masses) but WONDERFUL band that is dear to my heart from out of the City of Angels. They have been on the fringe edges of popular rotation off and on for well over a decade, but have a knack for highly political statements, scenes and music that seems to not be quite so radio friendly.

Ozo (as they are affectionatly known) is a band that could not have been created anywhere but LA and are very much a part of the city now. They will gig anywhere from the house of blues to a anti-war rally to a dodgers game. Their culture clash of hip hop, r&b, salsa, reggae, funk touches on everything from playing nice with mother earth to anthems of hope to party grooves. Also, as a reflection of their multiethnic/cultural perspective, they sing/rap in English and Spanish - mostly depending on what they are trying to get accross. I have seen them several times in concert and the number would be much higher if they visited South Florida more often (speaking of the devil, they’ll be in Ft. Lauderdale on March 7!).

So please enjoy one of my favorite songs by them. It makes me wanna stick a wreathe of flowers in my hair and frollick through through a park. If I didn’t have work today, thats where you would find me.

PSSSSSSS - they have LOTS of albums. I personally recommend catching them live if they’re ever in your town as they put on a HELLUVA show. They’ve actually just kicked off an east coast tour so check em out. Its usually standing room only but everyone is happy to be there. And, its usually a very moderate priced ticket. My favorite album of the bunch is Street Signs but they’re all quality.

LYRICS IN ENGLISH

look here comes the sun
Florescent, it opens like a beautiful flower

Heat up my soul
And erase my pain
With your light, you bring life
With you warmth, you give love
But heat my soul
And erase my pain
With your light, you bring life
with your warmth, you give love

Like a beautiful flower

Light my path
And guide my passage
Advance me so that I may rest
forever you fulfill

Light my path
and guide my passage
Advance me so that I may rest
forever you fulfill

Like a beautiful flower

look here comes the sun
the sun is already coming
Florescent, it opens like a beautiful flower
Like a beautiful flower
Take away my pain
Erase my pain
Take away my pain
Give me love, so I can live a better life

Lovely sun, lovely sun

Lovely sun give me love, so I can live a better life

Chavela Vargas - Paloma Negra (Black Dove)

Chavela 2Cavela 1

Isabel Vargas Lizano, better known as Chavela Vargas was born in Costa Rica in 1919 but immigrated to Mexico in 1933 at the age of 14. Known for singing traditional Ranchero music, Chavela has recorded over eighty albums and toured heavily in the US, Mexico, France and Spain. A huge success during the 1950s-mid1970s, Chavela was also closely tied to the intellectuals and artists of the time including Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

Once dubbed “la voz aspera de la ternura” - the rouge voice of tenderness, I quickly learned that this nickname was no not to be taken lightly. Paloma Negra was the song that first introduced me to this musical legend. I watched Chavela perform the song on television and was immediately moved by the pain in her voice. She is talking about being in love, yet knowing that she needs to release the toxicity from her life.

This song isn’t sung neatly or daintily. There is something so raw and pained…almost like a wounded animal that I think anyone can appreciate even if they don’t understand the language. It’s one of those rare artistic gems that you feel in your soul.

Also interesting to note, for those of you who might be confused if she is referring to a man or a woman in the song, Chavela is definitely singing to a woman in this song. As a young woman, she frequently dressed like a man, smoke/drank heavily, carried a gun, and was known for rocking her red poncho.  She came out as a lesbian at the ripe young age of 81.

If you like this, a great introduction to traditional Mexican music by an assortment of artists is the Frida soundtrack. This track is on there along with another Chavela classic, La Llorna (The Weeping Woman). Lyrics are below in both English and Spanish.

Paloma Negra

Black Dove

I’m tired of weeping and yet there’s no sign of the sun

I no longer know whether to curse you or pray for you

I’m afraid to look for you and afraid to find you

Where my friends have told me that you’ve gone

At times I feel like relinquishing the fight

And ripping out the nails that cause my pain

But my eyes are dying without looking into yours

And my affection returns to wait for you at dawn

And you decided on your own to find a party

Black dove, black dove where are you?

Stop playing with my honour, party girl

If your caresses are going to be mine, and no one else’s

And even though I love you madly, don’t come back to me

Black dove, you’re the bars on this cage of suffering

I want to be free, to live my life with whom I choose

Lord, give me strength for I’m dying to go find her
