SXSW Music Roundup: Brazilian Style - Part 2/3

The Name -You Want it Back Now

Another song I was listening to on my way to NJ yesterday was this gem. It has an awesome electronic beat in the beginning, with a house feel and then some rock. This song is just the shit. With such a good message, and a great breakdown around 1:03. Wait for it…..

Wale - Attention Deficit

Beautiful Bliss - Wale Ft Melanie Fiona & J Cole

This song just feels good for a Saturday. Enjoy.

Beautiful Bliss Lyrics

[Wale]
When you feel like this
When you spill out hits
When you fly as a bitch
And you ride with this
And you aint bothered a it now baby

Fresh out the airport
Fresh out the tan with the clippers
Like sean lippet thinking hmm
Im trying to get it like sean get it
If lord giveth a mill and a milf like skibbit
Its slight blemishes and life system
But im giving it foundation when I write lyric
That anvil night hard mine is bright knickers
Maybe not quite the star but my hearts in it
When brett hart meet bret farve
A sharp shooter well exceeding any figure four
You see my figure more or less stick some more
On your vest then my larynx and lungs and this voice I project
My project is like what pros inject
And niggas so fly I should be droved in jets
Its ironic they call me a fresh breath no joke
You see dem boys sign me to the scope right

[J.Cole]
i fall whole to the real they wanna know just how it feel
who woulda thought a lil nigga from the ville could get a deal
and tell dem niggas at the top we want yo spot we are for real
and yet we heard you got it locked but like dem socks we on your heels
so you best be on your toes nigga
especially on your flows nigga
cause man they keep on checking for me especially all your hoes nigga
catch me on your doorstep you see me let me in
all I wanna do is eat im like the freaky lesbian
now all I wanna do ball on tv knee E S P N
they heard im bout to blow so all my enemies say lets be friends
and all these rappers know just know where im bout to go so catch me then
where all the girls that we knew scream fuck you
go let me in im definiately in a class of my own
and dinner with hov hoping that he pass the baton
he just pass the patron
and he aint giving dog is earned if you just live in dog you learn
I let you niggas see the light im like the prison yard I yearn
For that living large but mama I aint done yet
Sit back and watch your son rise
Kick back until yo son set
Forever I aint run yet and I never will
Nas told me lifes a bitch
Pac said fuck the world and I aint come yet
You up yet?
My punchlines like gut checks im raw dog
Im rough sex im on deck im up next
Im godbless im success so fuck stress
You can get the fuck from around me
And if you listening know you wondering
Where the fuck they found me
Im from the ville boy

[Wale]
Another day up in my ES
Wish it was an LS
But elastic is my wallet fuck it
I don’t be stressed like relaxed muscles
Your feedback aint flexing
And you can keep it running like a muffler
When we not in summer
They like A list actors they not no stunners
Too much practice now for me to malfunction
So any beat that function I breathe on and puncture
Leave it like a female Dijon a puncture
Waiting showing you her beauty if shes naked
Its like a view of paintin or a lakehead
This shits how beautiful my day is
Peep me how im raising up the capital for Nathan
Capital im raising like im through punctuating
Or shift keys or it I placement cause
Shift the keys get your capital raised up

Rashid Zakat

Bebel - Rashid Zakat

That’s right! I’m back….

I fell in love with this track a few months ago, and it’s actually a song that my friend Rashid Zakat made in his creative genius moments. It’s a track that’s mix and the original is called Tanto Tempo by Bebel Gilberto who is an American Born Brazillian popular singer. Her song is definitely awesome in itself, but became a tune that would soon follow me around in my ringtones to playing in the background as I do work or just sit and stare at walls.

Check out more of Rashid’s brilliantry over at www.soulaquatics.com and link up with him now cause I have a feeling he’ll be going very far soon.

Higher - Blackberry Boyz

FRESH FACES FEATURE (we’re still working on the name)

Being an active user on Twitter (as I finally realize everyone should for various reasons), I stumbled across a very talented guy and just started twitting with him. Then I checked out his myspace. At first thought (before I clicked the link), I said, oh boy, let’s so what this sounds like. I come across so much BAD music on myspace, especially if they are in the south. It’s always the same random beat that you can get off of Garageband or equal or lesser value. No offence to anyone, step ya game up!

BUT Blackberry Boyz music, as soon as it came on, sounded like gold. It was actually really good. And he was actually rapping about SOMETHING, and it had substance and depth. This is what I’m talking about, I thought, I must tell the world.  Ok, well at least I thought I should put it on here for you all to listen. Ya’ll should check out his page to check more out. It’s http://www.myspace.com/daveflyer.

No lyrics! Just listen!

Oh and follow him too: @DaveFlyer and the rest of the Blackberry Boyz: @reisthefuture, @GetO2ed

Be easy everyone, back to work!

Q Tip - Life is Better (featuring Norah Jones)

So I’m in my finals season at school, crazy time, and usually when I’m doing work I love to listen to just amped up, hip hop.  Q Tip’s album has been on STEADY rotation, for some reason I just work 10x faster.

This song is a good one with Norah singing vocals, and her voice has this crazy flow that I love to listen to.  Apparently a lot of other rappers and hip hop artists feel the same way because I always hear her voice in the background.  This song also won the Gilles Peterson’s award for best song of the year. I can see why.

Not much to say about it, it’s just a good song to groove to, feel the love, listen to when you are walking on a cool sunny day.

Now back to work. Be easy.

(I got these lyrics from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogoMM5eCdGw - they may not be 100% accurate)

Life is filled with gray

Please fall away
Hip hop is playing again
And it’s bangin too
Gonna bang for you

Where Do We Go From Here - Alicia Keys

Alright, grab your tissues, and grab a beer. Let’s talk about feelings.

Whenever I am feeling just lost and alone, I listen to this song. While I do feel that at times Alicia can sounds SLIGHTLY flat in her songs (and by that I mean that the song doesn’t have much dimension), I felt that she layed her heart on this song.  It’s like you can tell she was in the shower, and just felt like she got to a point where she didn’t know what else to say. Her boyfriend and her were probably to the point of no return, and felt she had NO where else to go.  I mean where DO you go when it seems like no matter what you do you are holding on to ashes, and you can’t see anything else past your situation. It’s almost as if you have to really just believe that you’ll get better becuase you deserve better. You shouldn’t have to figure it out, or wonder what’s going to happen next. It should just flow, sure you’ll have arguments but they won’t span over days or weeks, or always be repeated or reminded?

Love shouldn’t be that hard, and if it is, I’m good.

Where Do We Go From Here”

[Verse 1]
We’re at the crossroads my dear
Where do we go from here
Maybe you wont go maybe you’ll stay
I know I’m going to miss you either way
Its such a lonely road

[Chorus]
Where do we go from here (We go) (All I Can Do Is)
Follow the tracks of my tears (Follow The Tracks) (Tears)

[Verse 2]
When I cry your name
Am I calling in vain?
Am I waitin’ only to drown in pain?
Don’t you do it no don’t you leave me this way
I don’t know if I could lift my head and face another day
It’s such a lonely road

[Chorus]
Where do we go from here (We go) (All I Can Do Is)
Follow the tracks of my tears (Follow The Tracks) (Tears)

[Bridge]
Usually not the kind of girl who’s lost and looking for direction
Who could this be staring at me
When I’m looking in the mirror trying find the resolution
Were to far gone to find our way home

Where do we go from here (We go) (All I Can Do Is)
Follow the tracks of my tears (Follow The Tracks of my tears)

Where do we go from here (Maybe you will go maybe you’ll stay) (All I Can Do Is)
Follow the tracks of my tears (Follow) (Either Way)

[x2]
Oh oh oh

The Roots - Clock with no hands

This song is the truth.  Partially because it is my truth.  I remember the first time I got the Roots CD Game Theory, and I used to skip past this song.  Then one day I listened to it.  My godmom’s father had just died on the day that I went to see him, before that I hadnt’ seen him in like 2 years.  So it was weirdly on time. And strangely haunting.  Anyway, I was sitting in the car with my best friend at the time smoking the sweet green, and we were listening to this song.  I realized that all along this CD was foreshadowing a lot of my life.  It was the summer of many funs, much laughter, and a lot coughing.. lol.. This song just celebrates that times of our lives that we will never visit again and only be able to remember.  It’s very nostalgic in a way.

Black Thought is so crazy with his word placement, and it’s all so true in this song in how we feel and how we approach life.  Now I’m in a state where “I was married to a state of mind”, but now I’m divorcing it.

Do something powerful, so you don’t have to look back and regret.

[Black Thought]
Yeah, sitting in the staircase, holding back tears
Looking over mad years worth of photographs
Pictures of some places I ain’t never going back
Some people I used to love, why I ain’t show them that?
The skies was overcast, when I was sober last
My head is spinning, couldn’t tell you if it’s slow or fast
It’s starting to get too clear, I got to go and grass
To y’all it’s a shame but life is what we know it as
Waiting, navigating the plot, without plans
In the car, it’s hard to read as a clock with no hands
How your man’s goin’ get up and stop with no yams
All it take is one break, it could pop the program
Whether sinning or not, my back bending like I’m sentenced a lot
I feel some brothers is beginning to plot
It might have been a close friend I forgot
Who started up and ain’t remember to stop
I bet these niggaz going remember the shop

[Hook]
People think that I’m crazy, just cause I wanna be alone
You can’t depend on friends to help you in a squeeze
We all deal with shit on our own
And sometimes the beef can grow, get out of hand
Yeah, you know it gets full blown
I never said that you mean the world to me
Maybe it’s best that you never know

Yo, I’m like Malcom out the window with the weapon out
Searching for somehow to find a minute or the second now
Precious time is money that I ain’t got to mess about
Need it from the horse’s mouth or from my eye with less account
Lessons with my back to the wall, scoping my session out
Stay a little edgy at times when I ain’t stressing bout
Haters don’t know shit about me, they the ones that talk shit
Those that love me send it out, so I ain’t got to force quit
Cause I’m doing better now, don’t mean I never lost shit
I was married to a state of mind and I divorced it, man
I’m from where brothers moving product from the porches
People locking their doors, clutching to their crosses
The block hot by the law, there ain’t too many choices
So what I do is for y’all, there ain’t too many voices left
I watch my back, and watch my step
And I might forgive, but I will not forget come on

[Hook]

Yo, living in turbulent times
The blind leading the blind
Some call it evolution, some say intelligent design
You say you want a revolution, you out of your mizind
Your sons’ destitute, and their pops all in the prison
My man’s back in the jam, he like the back of my hand
He just attracted to scam, he right back in the can
I never sleepwalking, you dig
You get your shuteye
I’m on the first thing in, I’m leaving on the red-eye
My brother back in rehab, just had another relapse
But fin himself, it’s been like he’s been fighting an energy
Half telling me nobody true when they pretend to be that
So closer than friends, that’s where I keep my enemy at
To many parties concerned, it’s time to live it and learn
Until we’re able to grow, forever bridges we burn
My thoughts free as a bird, that’s just about to emerge
And every action is heard, it speaks louder than words, yo

Betty Davis - 70s Blues

Betty Davis

“The former wife of Miles Davis, Betty Mabry Davis, is perhaps the only woman in the world who could rightfully have the following legent tatooed across her rear: THIS ASS INVENTED FUSION.”

This woman was bad.  Like the kind of bad that you want to be like.  Considering that I just learned about her yesterday (shame on me), I’m new to all the drama that she caused.  Apparently she cheated on Miles Davis with Jimi Hendrix… What better mix right?  This journey of getting to know her started when I was asked what this post should be about, what type of music was I in the mood for.  I felt like some blues/jazz/funk.  No better choice of words.  I think it was nailed when this song was dropped in my lap.  I love the 70s a lot, and wished I was apart of all the shennanigans.  I mean, back then you had a reason for fucking around, and being fucked up in the head. Or no, rather just having a good time.  You lose control, and you lose yourself in the music and the culture.  Today I’m trying to start up another revolution as such.  I don’t know how or where I’m starting, but it’s started already in my head.  There’s no reason that we can’t look back and say “man, those crazy 2000s…”. Although that doesn’t sound quite as fun as saying those “crazy 60s”.  Hmm.. maybe I’ll give it a name period.

Betty was talking about the blues taking over, and she has just lost control.  That’s about the gyst of the song.  And that’s okay with me.  Let something take you over today. I think it’s healthy.

Sorry no lyrics, but do I ever have lyrics?

Cotton Jones Basket Ride - Up a Tree (Went This Heart I Have)

Have you ever felt that you were in a movie, and that you just hear random songs that further exemplify that feeling?  That’s how I felt when I was picking up my computer from this local store around here.  It needed the logic board and display fixed.. (darn Apple, still love them).  Anyway I was riding in my car, and I had on the independent music station (88.5 for you Atlanta dwellers).  This song came on, and I just fell in love with it.  I think the main reason was that it just felt so whimsical, and I was driving down a tree laced road, temperature about 60 degrees.  And it seemed like when this song came on, whatever I was doing before had a fade to black to it, and this song just further made my day more exciting. I was getting my baby back (my Macbook Pro), and everything really just was fine.

When I started listening to the lyrics, it just felt so true.  While it’s a happy tuned song, he seems to be talking about how his heart has left him.  But he seems to be ok.  He knows that even though all this shit is happening, the morning bells are coming.

I don’t have much else to say, this song is just awesome. And he feels it. We all should.

Sorry no lyrics.

Michel’le - Something in My Heart

I was 9 years old (1991) when I was watching Regis and Kathy Lee (before Kelly), and Michel’le was on there.  At the time she was best known for her song Nicety.  The song was awesome because you wondered if there was a little kid talking in the middle. In which case, I wondered why she would put a song like this with a kid in the middle.  But then to my surprise while I was watching Regis and heard this squeaky voice answering the questions. How is this even possible.  An annoying voice, and then when she sung, it sounded like Aretha’s cousin (minus the hat)

Well when this song, “Something In My Heart” came out (1992), I was floored (yes even at 10 years old). It made me feel really good, and little did I know that at least once a year after my adolescent years I would be listening to this song reminiscing of where I have been, and who I felt that way with.  Wow, this song was the shit, and I knew it at a young age.  My step father who was a Dj would bus bangin notes and melodies out of the garage, and this would be one I would hear often.  From awesome tones, to that one “ding” you hear after every 8th beat (or whatever the time signature is).  She was so underrated, and I wish she would came out with some more keepers like this. Plus how much cooler can you be when your name is spelled like that.

To get to the core and meaning of the song. She is talking about how her love is being taken, and she doesn’t mind, and everything that you have been searching for is already there.  We tried to end it, but something has got me hooked. We just gotta try to make it work, because it won’t work with no one else. Let’s just try.

Man, she really needs to write another hit.

You take my love and I’m willin’
There’s no limit to the love I’m givin’
The love I’m givin’
Ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…ooh…

ah, yeah…

There’s no reason why
We should be apart, hmm…oh, baby
‘Cause searchin’ for somethin’ not there
Will lead to lonely hearts, to lonely hearts

We’ve come too far to let it all end
I’ve told you over and over again
How I feel inside, but if you go
Oh, baby, there’s you should know
Something you should know

(Something you should know)
There’s something in my heart
(Something in my heart, something in my heart)
Ooh, it’s got me hooked on you, ho…ho…
(Something in my heart, something in my heart)
Ooh, it’s got me hooked on you, hoo…oh…oh…oh…

Baby, if we try
Things’ll get better, ah, yeah…
No one could tell me different
We should be together

(Baby, don’t you know)
The changes I’m goin’ through
You know I’ll never be the same
Your love has touched me so
There’s no one else to blame but you
And there’s something you should know

(Something you should know)
There’s something in my heart
(Something in my heart, something in my heart)
Ooh, it’s got me hooked on you, ho…ho…
(Something in my heart, something in my heart)
Ooh, it’s got me hooked on you, ho…yeah…

Di-di-di-da
Ooh…hoo…hoo…
Ooh…hoo…

(Baby, don’t you know)
We’ve come too far to let it all end
I’ve told you over and over again
How I feel inside, but if you go
Oh, baby, there’s something you should know
Something you should know

(Something you should know)
There’s something in my heart
(Something in my heart, something in my heart)
Ooh, it’s got me hooked on you, ho…ho…
(Something in my heart, something in my heart)
Ooh, it’s got me hooked on you, ho…yes, it does

(Something in my heart, something in my heart)
Ooh, it’s got me hooked on you, yes, it does, why won’t you stay
(Something in my heart, something in my heart)
Ooh, it’s got me hooked on you, ho…

(Something in my heart, something in my heart)
